Windows 7 no longer updates

I think MS have intentionally borked windows update for Windows 7 in the hopes of pushing people into upgrading to Windows 10, I have come across numerous older machines that once ran Win7 perfectly yet over the last year they have all become useless due to Windows updates running constantly and thrashing the hell out of processor and RAM, I've had to upgrade 2 laptops to Win10 in the last 2 weeks one is a net top with an Atom dual core and 1GB RAM that ran 7 fine for a long time until recently and the other is a single core Sempron with 4GB RAM and a 60GB SSD both running like dogs cause the processor is constantly at 100% mainly due to windows update and a couple of other MS services. They didn't use to be like this hence my thinking that MS have done something intentionally to move more people away from Windows 7....

 

Windows update cannot currently check for updates.

So I got this laptop thats running Windows 7 and has the dreaded "Windows update cannot currently check for updates" error and I have tried pretty much everything I can find on the net but still it wont start. Im pretty sure if I change a 1 to a 0 in the registry it will get it working but I cant remember where that is exactly to do that (Did it yrs ago)

If anyone could help or give ideas and links for me to try to get it to work that would be much appreciated.

Windows Update suddenly hangs?

Windows Update is suddenly hanging for some reason... I went and downloaded and installed the first bunch of updates, restarted when asked, and now when I go back to windows update I just get the window with a white box forever. Reboot and it still does it. This happens to be on my main machine, running windows 7.

I've also noticed when I reboot it says configuring windows update, step 3 of 3, 47%. Maybe it somehow skipped something and is screwed forever?
