To wipe the device using Microsoft services you would have to have had set up and enabled properly prior to the laptop being stolen. But just in case you have done this the following guide shows you how to remotely wipe the laptop

I am sorry this has happened to you, changing you password was the correct thing to do and will not affect your ability to lock your laptop remotely . . .

However, in order for you to lock your laptop remotely, it must be online and still using your Microsoft Account

The sad truth is laptops are stolen in order to re-sell them for cash . . .

When a laptop is stolen it is most likely wiped within an hour of being stolen, so if the thief is caught with the laptop, it cannot be traced and proven it is actually stolen

While this is no consolation to you, it does mean that statistically you do not need to worry about anyone accessing your data, it will have long since been deleted by the thief

You can continue to try locking that laptop, should it appear online on the 'Find My PC' web page',it is however, unlikely that will happen . . .
