    High CPU when opening Start Menu


    Prerequisites Multi monitor setup Task bar on all displays. Display 3 is main display. IMHO this behavior exists only for a few days or weeks, but I cannot exactly tell when it started. I have the situation on two different hardware setups, Dell and HP and on a company and a private Windows 10 installation. So I assume it looks like a general issue.Effect Open Start Menu on one of the two additional non main displays. Task bar search field starts flickering and CPU load goes high, CPU ventilator starts immediately. Start Menu is unusable for one to two minutes. In the end, the explorer cra

    Cortana & COM Surrogate high CPU usage when Search or Start Menu is opened

    Hi Ruth,

    Thank you for suggesting these troubleshooting steps. Unfortunately, starting in a Clean Boot did not resolve the issue. I remember that there were some updates available prior to this issue (KB3156421 and KB3152599) and I didn't do any major changes to
    the system.

    One thing that I forgot to mention in my first post, is that the high CPU usage also sometimes occurs with the "Host Process for Windows Tasks" process too. It mostly happens with COM Surrogate, but this process shows up sometimes too.

    Windows 10 Display Blinking with High CPU

    After upgrade to Windows 10, experiencing flashing display and high CPU.

    • At initial logon screen everything is normal - wall paper and logon screen display with no blinking
    • After logon, fan starts as CPU usage spikes, cursor is accompanied by the spinning blue circle
    • touchscreen does not respond to swipe to access Recovery/Safe mode for reboot
    • able to get to Task Manager and Perfmon to see high CPU usage and explorer.exe is suspended
    looking for suggestions on how to either fix or roll back to Windows 8.1

    Windows 10 Start Menu won't open.

    Hi Dougie,

    Corrupted system files could be one of the reason why Start Menu is not opening.
