Windows 10: High DISK 100% usage

    High DISK 100% usage

    Curious to know if I might have a problem(s) or maybe it's just the nature of the beast. At startup the following executables are responsible to 100% disk usage thus slowing down my laptop for anywhere 3 - 14/15 minutes:

    • Service Host: Local System (Network Restricted)
    • Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry
    • System
    • Microsoft Office Click -to-Run (SxS)
    • McAfee Scanner Service
    • McAfee WebAdvisor

    This has been written about in a number of blogs, forums, and web sites. I think I've tried most everything I've run across and my startup remains high. That is disk usage remains high from 3-14 minutes. Then is settles down and remains 0-3%. McAfee - not much I can do; disabling Microsoft Click... seems to break my Office 2016, and the others I don't know. I've reinstalled (clean) windows 10, that didn't seem to help. The only other option I haven't looked into is replacing my HHD with a SSD. But I first need to know how likely it is that the aforementioned executables always or usually take some time at startup.


    Computer: Lenovo T460, i7-6600U processor, 12 GB RAM

    Windows 10, version 1803

    In the Task Manager, under Performance tab, the disk utilization reaches to 100% due to which system became lagging and unresponsive. It started freezing in few moments and this keeps happening until disk usage reduces from 100%.

    Control panel > Power Options > Edit Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings > Processor Power Management > Maximum Processor state.

    Also, once I start Chrome 64, it uses lots of cpu and ram to do absolutely nothing.

    Windows 10 - High Disk Usage - 100%

    I am seeing high disk usage, often between 90 and 100%.

    I have tried adjusting some settings, some help temporarily but after a restart I have the same high disk usage issue.

    • Disable superfetch
    • Disable Windows Search
    • Disable Windows Update
    • Disable Geolocation Services
    • Disable Network Services
    • Manually adjust paging file size for programs and background services
    • Got rid of apps (no chrome, got rid of bloat like Amazon, etc.)
    The main user of disk usage appears to be Service Host Local System 13 and it uses anywhere between .5 and 10 MB.

    Below is a snip of the task manager. Computer is Dell Inspiron 15 - 3000 series. 4 GB RAM, 64 bit operating system and AD A4 processor if that helps.

    Any ideas on how to resolve the high disk usage issue permanently?

    thanks for you reply.

    At the moment the Disk usage is normal, but at anytime it may be 100% without any reason !

    I'll give you a screenshot when the Disk is in use with 100%.

    but I don't think making a clean boot is a good idea because sometimes the problem doesn't happen as I said, it suddenly become 100% !
