Windows 10: High Memory usage when using Utorrent

Seriously, uTorrent has become a bloated mess and is now crammed with hidden malware/adware. All my AV/AS scanners have flagged the installation and I've checked other sources and can confirm it has become a PUA (potentially unwanted application) because of it. And yes, this was directly downloaded from their official site.

I'm currently looking at Qbittorrent, Transmission QT and Deluge. As they seem to be highly mentioned as uTorrent alternatives without the ads and bloat. uTorrent used to be great, but not now. It has sunk to lower depths and I'm not going to fish it out or bother with it again.

 

Sorry to hear you are having problems with utorrent also and had to change to another torrent program. Many people have good results with other torrent programs so I hope you find one that works great for you.

Like with other legitimate tools, like Daemon-tools, Java, etc.. many of them have a very easy to miss option in the installer to install adware, it's on by default and if you just click next, next, next you're going to get the adware installed.

You have to be very careful to make sure to decline the offers. The same is true of utorrent.

 

uTorrent was still flagged trying to install hidden junk by my AV/AS software during the install AFTER DECLINING the offers. So I no longer trust it. I don't think it's a false positive either. I'm avoiding it now. It was great in the past. But not anymore. Don't get me wrong. I used to love and recommend it as a torrent client. But not anymore.

 

Actually, I had this same problem and I did fix it. It's due to a glitch in the OS and it requires a registry edit to fix.

Go into regedit and then do this

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Ndu

Change the Start value to 4 (for disable).

Then restart the computer and utorrent should work fine. If you do a google search for

Windows Network Data Usage Monitoring Driver

Then you'll see that this is a known issue. I've had this edit done for awhile now with no negative issues.

Edit: Missed where it had already been solved. My Bad.

 

I am not saying this from personal experience. It's simply a well known fact. Google it! Also, how do you know you don't have a problem? Trojans generally don't come with a neat little notification.

I have never had any (knock on wood) I guess because I have always installed software to protect me against it. It is a fact though that some or maybe all of antivirus and malware programs give false reports about some programs that we all attempt to install. If I read a forum post that states the software I am using detected a virus or Trojan while installing a certain program I will do some searching and be sure its not just a false reading before I attempt to install it myself.
Yes I know I don't have a trojan because my system is working properly and I pay for software that alerts me of any intrusions. I am also careful what I install and allow through my firewall. It is either the software I use to protect me is working as intended or I am very lucky. I really think its what I pay for because I do get alerts of things being blocked.
Be sure you have top notch protection for your system.

Actually there have been questions asked about uTorrent being a false positive. The developer never answered that. In fact they stayed silent about the matter. Not good in my eyes.

Of course all this started happening with their recent releases. It does carry something hidden as it needs to display ads. That hidden something has to be installed for it to work.

It is flagged as a PUA for good reason. That is where the user has to decide if they want to continue or not. That is their choice. No right or wrong about it. Just be very cautious.
