Windows 10: High Ping During Gaming Despite Good Wifi Speeds

I consistently get 300–400 Mbps on Wi-Fi speed tests, but while gaming, my ping remains at a consistent 40ms, which feels high for my preferences. How can I reduce my ping to improve my gaming experience?

Windows 10 slow WiFi speed, high ping in games

Hello,
I have been having extremely high ping in online games like BF1 and Titanfall 2 (>500 with spikes to over 1000, pretty much unplayable), and slow WiFi speeds. I have already updated my wireless drivers and disabled location and automatic updates. Speedtest.net shows a ping of around 40 ms, and download speeds of about 7-10 Mb/s. Wired connections are a little less than 10 times as fast for downloads, and significantly lower ping. Doing a speedtest on my Galaxy S6 gives 12 ms ping and 35 Mb/s downloads. I have done a speedtest on my windows 10 laptop with the same WiFi dongle as my desktop, as well as the built in card, with very similar results. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

 

High ping

I was having an issue with high ping numbers with AT&T DSL. I was supposed to be getting up to 12Mbps, but wasn't getting anywhere near that consistently. Sometimes it would be less than 1Mbps, other times working within it's range. I switched to a new internet provider and the speedtests so far have been consistently what I should be getting for up and down speeds, but my ping is still in the 100ish range. My xbox is hard wired to my gateway, as is my PC. My xbox, however, showed a 97ish ping after running a speed test and the same with my phone. So I'm wondering if my high ping on my PC could be caused by an issue within my PC. I tried it both hard wired and wifi, only to get the same ping rate. I'm running Windows 10 on a lower end gaming pc.
