Windows 10: Highlighting is suddenly broken

Suddenly ever since I opened my laptop this morning I'm not able to highlight text most of the time. Browser text, Word text, what have you.

I click to highlight text, hold it, then suddenly in the middle the mouse "unclicks", deletes the highlight I already made, and starts highlighting from a new place. Basically it's impossible for me to copy and paste any larger blocks of text, and I need lots of luck to get smaller bits.

Yes, I have turned the computer on and off again. Yes, I have disconnected and connected the mouse again. Yes, I have turned double click way down. Yes, I have turned off the "increase mouse precision" setting. According to device manager, everything works fine, nothing needs a new driver, there are no new drivers. The system doesn't have any new actualizations for me to install. No, I cannot use the pad, because on this computer it's a featureless piece of shit without even a scroll.

The only person with tech skills I have an access to IRL called me a fucking moron and that this cannot happen and I'm making shit up.

The mouse was working briliantly yesterday. It was cleaned two days ago. My ability to edit/manipulate text with any sort of precision is now severely limited. What has happened?

Is my graphics card broken?

I have a Sapphire HD 4830.

When I boot into XP all is initially fine and I am able to see the desktop.

However, when I click on the start bar and navigate a few steps, I receive an immediate white screen of death and a total irrecoverable lock-up.

I am confused about what this could mean and I would be grateful for any suggestions on the best course of action to test and repair the problem.

Does this sort of issue suggest that the graphics card is irretrievably broken?

  Are you not able to highlight the text or link by dragging the left click of the mouse?
  
• 
  Do you get options when you left click on the link or sentence?
  

I suggest you to drag over the sentence or link by holding the left button of the mouse and check if the issue is resolved. Right click on the mouse to show a list of options to do with the highlighted sentence or link.
