Windows 10: Home network discovery not working after latest W10 Update

The latest cumulative update for W10 Version 1511 fixed all but one of my networked computers. For some reason it is still not visible on the network but it can see and share with all the other PC's. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

 

have not had any problems with my wife's, since I had to do a reset to where it was intial account setup.

It has been running smoothly since I got her's up again.

It is coming down to where you either stick with one version of Windows 10. Or have to install the new version as new and then reinstall all of your software.

I am getting to the point that I am just going to kill 10 and install Linux Mint on her laptop, since everything she does, can be done inside Chrome.

 

Beginning with Windows 7, I had nothing but trouble with Homegroups. I would get a random "network path not found" error when attempting to connect to any PC within my Homegroup. Several people I know had the same issue. Problem plagued me all the way to Windows 10. TH2 November update finally resolved the problem for me, but now I'm having the same problem as you all. No PCs show up in Explorer Network panel. I can start run \\PCNAME and browse them all fine, they're just not readily visible in explorer. As a workaround, I just created shortcuts to my shares.

Microsoft needs to get these Homegroup\Networking problems sorted out ASAP, but I'll gladly deal with this problem compared to my last one. As long as I can reliably get to my other PCs, I can deal.

 

The latest V1511 update did this; before, could reach all networked devices by name, one of my W7 x64 computers but not the other and not my Mac or WD NAS could bee seen, after, could reach all networked devices by name, the other W7 x64 computer showed up and the first one disappeared, MAC and NAS could not be seen.

Very deterministic and robust behaviour, really gives the impression that MS knows what they are doing. Right!
I am still on 10240, obviously.

Just to let you know that same is happening in my case. I have one Ethernet connected PC, one Wifi connected PC, one Wifi connected Laptop, all running W10 latest version, and one Wifi connected Printer. Sometimes all is working fine, but most time none is showing up! I hope M$ will fix it soon!

 

This is not a Windows issue. I have had no issues with networking through regular networking shares.

Majority of the times it is a Firewall or third party Internet Security software issue.

Unless you are running some kind of odd network setup. It should work just fine.

You certainly are consistent. When I go back to my original post in this thread you indicated that there was not a problem with the W10 V1511 release. Yet, a few days later MS came out with a cumulative update that resolved all the issues I and a bunch of other people were having with sharing except for one of my seven W10 machines on my home network. That just happens to be the only PC that I let MS update from W8.1.1 to W10 rather than do a clean install. Seems like some other people out there have a similar issue which they posted on a separate thread I started after I installed the cumulative update and still had an issue on one machine.

I've had Windows since Win 1 (November 20, 1985). That's 30 years of experience with this operating system. Windows has always been a tempermental piece of software and user experience with neverending issues. I still love it but it certainly hasn't been a smooth sailing relationship over 3 decades. *Confused

Yep I go back all the way to the beginning even before Win 1 with MS DOS on an IBM PC XT.

 

KRL, isn't that sweet. I have been around computers since CP/M came out.

Windows has its issues. Networking has been working fine with the majority of us that have our networks set up properly.

Any network device like a NAS, needs to have a Static IP. Also SMB has to have the workgroup stay under the name of WORKGROUP.

I have had zero issues with a standardized network setup.

Microsoft failed when they created that stupid Homegroup setup.

Also a lot of network problems can be attributed to the Router/Gateway, any type of non standard IP scheme or third party security software.

 

Now that this thread has digressed again - back to the original issue! I tried turning the Windows Firewall off on the problem machine and rebooted the system and it became visible on the network! The only thing I can rationalize is that I tried that "fix" before the cumulative update was applied and it did not fix the Discover problem.

Just an aside, I wrote my first program for a IBM 1410 computer in 1964. I bought one of the first Apple machines in 1977 to play with at home.

It's fun thinking back to those early Apple days with the "green" displays that looked so cool at the time. I bought one of the Apple IIc's.
