Home Networking – Windows cannot access \\PCs name

    Hi,

I am back on this forum again with the same problem and start to wonder if Windows updates change my settings without notifying me.

Hence, I have 4 PCs on my Home network and they all share the same Workgroup name. However they are configured as follow:

    · Laptop running Win 10 Pro

    · Desktop1 running Win 10 Pro

    · Desktop2 running Win 10

    · Desktop3 running Win 7

Note my Laptop and Desktop1 PCs are configured to log-in using a Microsoft “common” account Hotmail and that my Laptop and Desktop1 are also each configured with different family Microsoft accounts. As said, notice these PCs run now under Win 10 Pro.

    The situation is:

    · When I am running both of my Win 10 Pro PCs logged-in with the same Microsoft Hotmail account, both PCs can share all shared contents between themselves on my network BUT my Desktop2 and Desktop3 cannot access them despite there are visible in file explorer.

    · When I am running both of my Win 10 Pro PCs logged-in with different Microsoft family accounts, there contents cannot be shared despite there are visible in file explorer by any PCs on my Home network.

In other words, Win10 Pro PCs can share content between themselves ONLY when signed-in with a “common” Microsoft account while the others PCs are ALWAYS refused to share their contents.

I wish HOMEGROUP would still be part of Win 10. Things were much simpler then.

Can someone help my again with this most puzzling and frustrating problem?

    Thanks in advance,

    :)

  2. Error: Windows cannot access \\PC-Name, you do not have permission to access this pc. Contact your network administrator to request access, while trying to access one PC from another over network

    Hi,

I understand that you are facing issues while accessing one PC from another PC over the network. For further clarity on the issue, please respond to the questions below.

    1. Are the entire PC’s running Windows 10 1809 build version?
    2. Have you tried accessing the PC using IP address of the PC?
    3. Are the PC’s connected to domain network?

I certainly appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve the issue by performing certain troubleshooting steps.

However, I would suggest you to refer the suggestions by

  3. Issues while accessing PC over the network

    Hi Cliff,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that you are facing issues while accessing the PC’s over the network. For further clarity on the issue, please respond to the questions below.

    1. Have you connected both the laptops to the same network through which the PC is connected?
    2. Which build version of Windows is installed on the PC’s?

    Refer the article
Which version of Windows operating system am I running?

Meanwhile, I would suggest you to try connecting the PC to the main router and see if you are able to access the laptops.

If you are able to access the laptops, then we need to configure the network settings once again. You can refer the suggestions by

Home Networking – Windows cannot access \\PCs name

One computer cannot access other network computers.

So I've tried every troubleshooting step I know:
    • Double checked that Net Bios was enabled
    • Ran a bunch of network commands:
      • flushed DNS
      • registered dns
      • pinged and located the named computers successfully
    • Reset my router to factory settings

Nothing works when I try to access via explorer. I'm still baffled by the fact that every other computer can access each other AND access this computer. It's just the outgoing connection from this machine that doesn't work.

    Any thoughts?
