Backstory: I've started using a computer that my late partner built for gaming a few years ago. It needed some software updates before I could start loading my work programs onto it. I discovered this issue when using software that creates an interface for a datalogger that I had connected to a USB port on the machine. The software couldn't identify any COM ports. In googling about this, I found that on most Windows machines, USB ports are listed under the 'Ports (COM & LPT)' category in Device Manager.

As it stands, all of the USB ports are listed under their own category, with the exception of the port that I've plugged my RS232-USB adapter into:

Clearly, I need to be able to specify these as COM ports in order for my computer to be able to interface with this datalogger.

    How do I accomplish this?

    Thanks in advance!

Edited to add: I'm a total n00b with Windows 10, as I've been primarily a Mac user for well over a decade. As such, the more descriptive your advice, the easier it'll be for me to understand.

    Device Manager USB Ports

How is the device listed under "Other devices" (how is it named)?

Also, can you double-click the device > Details, then choose "Hardware Ids" from the drop-down menu under "Property".

    What is listed under "Value"?

Also, on the Windows 7 computer where the device works how is it listed (named) in the Device Manager?

  3. port COM and LPT in the Devices Manager are not appearing

    Hi Luis,

I suggest you follow the steps to check for hidden devices, and check if it helps.

1.Press Windows + X and click on Device Manager.

2.Click on View menu and select Show hidden devices. See if this helps in getting the ports to list.

    3. Expand the Ports under device manager. Uninstall any entries which appear grayed out, then restart.

    4. Right-click your computer name in Device Manager and click Scan for hardware changes. Device manager scans your system and automatically reinstalls your device.

If the issue persists, then I recommend you to install the latest drivers for your motherboard.

Do let us know the result.

    Thank you.

external hard drive showing up in device management but not disk management

    Hi,

I recently tried to use a brand new Seagate 2TB External HD, but it is not showing up. It initially showed up, but after I tried reformatting it to exFAT32, it disappeared from the disk management list.

    I then tried:

    • refreshing the disk management list,
    • inserting into a different USB port,
    • re-starting my computer, and
    • uninstalling the device from device manager/letting it refresh,

I still can't see it. There is no yellow error in the USB controller list.

    I'm on Windows 10.

    Intel i5-3317U @ 1.7GHz

    Any suggestions? Thanks!
