Hi allMy understanding is that the Host Name can be used to match a site on IIS to a requestso that you don't have to specify the port address in the request url.Examples:WITHOUT Host Name in Bindings:IIS Bindings : Type http Port 83 IP Address 192.168.1.225Request URL mysite.mydomain,org:83 returns correct site on port 83.Request URL mysite.mydomain, org returns default site on port 80.WITH Host Name in Bindings:IIS Bindings : Type http Port 83 IP Address 192.168.1.225 Host Name mysite.mydomain, orgRequest URL mysite.mydomain,org:83 returns correct site on port 83.Request URL mysite.mydomain,or

  2. Adding a Host Name to IIS's Site Bindings Forms Prevents Browsers Locating the Website

I have just tried serving my Windows 11 based Website using IIS.

If I leave the Host Name blank in the Site Bindings form I can connect my (Firefox) browser to my website using the address "localhost:81"

If I add a Host Name, say "www.WithymeadTest.org" my browser cannot find it despite the fact that I have set up the Hosts file on my PC as follows:-

    127.0.0.1:81 www.WithymeadTest.org # Local Withymead Website

Can anyone explain what I am doing wrong (I'm new to IIS).

  3. Adding a Host Name to IIS's Site Bindings Forms Prevents Browsers Locating the Website

    Hi Greg,

I'm not a web developer, I'm an end user who makes small changes to a charity's website. There is no code on this website, it's pure html and css.

I want to be able to see the changes I make (to the html and css) before I publish on the live website. I had hoped that IIS would enable me to do this by allowing me to display, on my PC through my browser, the said changes. I am new to IIS and finding it opaque. There seems to be no "dummies guide" to getting started with IIS.

I cannot understand why adding a host name to the Edit Bindings dialog causes my browser to be unable to find the said host. If I leave this field blank the browser can display the website when directed to "localhost:81".

Where, oh where, is there some documentation that explains this ?

Here are Guides to using IIS:

If you need further guidance I would ask one of the experts in web development at the forums I referred you to previously. They would be the brains to tap for putting together what you need.

I hope it helps. Feel free to ask any questions.
