Windows 10: Hosts file being used for another process

Hi There sorry if the question is reposted.


i tried to install some program but it denied due to the installation cant access hosts file because being used for another process see image below




since i dont what process using the hosts file and try to google to find the program that used hosts file but no luck at all..

then i did restore my default hosts file as per this link:

after i reset my computer it still populated like that.

my question is, is there any program to identify which program that used hosts file so i cant de-activate the process from that program?

because i dont know what program used this hosts file

Hosts file editing

I have to jump in and say I use, and have used the host file for years. It's an easy way to take stress off of old name servers. I don't add everything, but major shares I do add to the host file. I've used the host file for some tunneling as well. I try to optimize my network as much as possible and I have a solid network. But Easy Rhino is right as well, you'll want to have everything he suggested as well. *Toast :toast:

 

Windows 10 hosts file used by another process

I need to edit my hosts file but the previous methods I used on windows 8 or 7 will not work.

• 
  I have set the permission for the "hosts" file to full access for the current user. I have even taken the ownership. Current user is in Administrators group.
  
• 
  I have turned off UAC.
  
• 
  I have removed read only permission from the file.
  
  
• 
  I have disabled my Panada Antivirus. I have also stopped 3 panda services from Services palette (heck, I even uninstalled panda but no use).
  
• 
  I open an elevated Command Line (run as Administrator). Run Notepad and change the file. When I try to save the file I receive the following error:
  
  "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
  
• 
  I check the file using "Unlocker" and the software says there is no active lock on the file. I again checked with Sysinternals Process explorer and even that cannot find a handle to the hosts file.
  

Can anyone help?

Please no "canned" response from community contributors and I am aware of the risks! of editing system files and setting a looser permission on this file!

 

Hosts file being used in another process

Trying to change some files in the hosts file and can't save, as it says " file being used in another process." How do I fix this?
