  1. How bonkered is this HDD?

    First off, the necessary specs:
    1R8174-020 Seagate Mobile HDD 2TB 5400RPM SATA 6Gbps 128MB Cache 2.5-inch Internal Hard Drive
    Windows 10 Pro v1909 x64

I'll start by saying that I am only looking to better understand what the problem may be with this particular hard drive and how much of a problem it is or could be. The HDD is used for storing the video for my home surveillance cameras (4 of them). Data loss is of absolutely NO concern whatsoever, nor is drive failure of any concern. I just want to better understand the failures that have or are occuring with the HDD.

History of issues with the HDD:
This particular HDD started life as the OE HDD in my laptop. The HDD has been a bit of a problem child since literally day two. In the first year of ownership on maybe 6 occasions I got a message prior to windows loading the said "hard drive failure imminent", the first occurrence being on the second day I had the laptop. It would boot just fine after giving the message and when I contacted HP about it, the drive would always pass the tests they asked me to do so they wouldn't warranty it.

Then one day, the laptop wouldn't boot to windows at all and gave me a "HDD failure" message. It gave this message on numerous attempts to boot the laptop over the next few days. At that point I was already seriously considering getting a SSD for the laptop and had even picked out which one I wanted, so the failure was no big issue to me, even with the warranty being expired by about a month.

After putting the new SSD in my laptop, I thought I'd plug the failed HDD into my destop via a HDD docking station to see if I could access anything on it... just for grins. Much to my surprise, the HDD came to life as if nothing had happened. It has worked just fine ever since, now serving as the storage location for my security cameras. On a side note, the HDD regularly beeps a single beep every time the drive is powered down for a computer shut down or restart. I always figured it was an OE diagnostic or failure warning beep of some kind, but IDK.

I recently noticed in Speccy that the HDD in question was listed as "warning" for its S.M.A.R.T. status. However, all the listed parameters said "good". Also, In windows disk management, the HDDs status shows healthy. In CrystalDiskInfo, the status shows "caution". Screenshots are below for all 3 programs. I believe what is triggering the warning status is the Reallocated Sectors Count and/or the Reported Uncorrectable Errors. Can anybody that knows more than I do about these numbers chime in? Is this drive on borrowed time or is this maybe a recurring issue that isn't crucial to the drives operation? Again, I couldn't care less if the drive fails... I'm just looking to learn about what the numbers are saying. Also, why the conflicting status of the drive between different programs?

    Thanks in advance

    HDD Corrupt ?

    Hi,

There are many possible reasons this issue is happening. We'd like to ask few questions below:

    • What is the brand name of you Hard Disk Drive?
    • How old is the HDD?
Since you already tried multiple troubleshooting steps, we suggest visiting the manufacturer's website. Find and download a hard drive diagnostic software to help resolve the issue.

Let us know how it goes.
