I accessed the data on a Bitlocker protected USB memory stick on Saturday on my PC Win 8.1.I entered the unlock password and was presented with the list of files in Explorer. After working with some of the files, I ejected the USB memory stick and removed it from the PC.When I connected the USB memory stick again this morning to my PC still Win 8.1, the USB memory stick was not recognized any more. 2. after Redstone update, Can't access to the USB storage that protected by bitlocker.

    Hi Koenig,

    Apologies for the inconvenience.

    Let me ask you a few questions;

    • What exactly happens when you try to access the USB?
    • Are you asked to enter Bitlocker password?
    • What happens when you enter the password?
    • If you receive any error message, what is the exact error message displayed?
You can try the following steps and check.

    Step 1: Gather required materials

Obtain the following items to help you recover encrypted data from the affected volume:

    1. The drive on which the damaged volume is located. This is the drive that contains the encrypted volume that you want to repair.

    2. The recovery password or the recovery key for the encrypted volume. This is the recovery information that you saved when you enabled BitLocker.

    3. An external hard disk. Use this drive to store the recovered data. This drive must be at least as large as the drive from which you want to recover the data.

Caution All the data on the external drive will be removed when you perform the recovery operation.

    4. A USB flash drive. Use this storage device to store the BitLocker Repair Tool files. You can also store recovery information on this drive.

    5. The Windows 10 DVD/USB. This enables you to start a command prompt.

Note: The edition of Vista on the DVD and the installation of Vista on the computer must be the same.

Step 2: Download and install the BitLocker Repair Tool

Download and install the Bitlocker Repair Tool that is appropriate for the recovery DVD that you plan to use. When prompted, click
Accept to accept the license terms.

Step 3: Copy the BitLocker Repair Tool files to a removable device

After installation, copy the following files to the root of the removable device, such as a USB flash drive that will be used for the recovery:

    %windir%\system32\bderepair.dll

    %windir%\system32\repair-bde.exe

Also, create a folder named en-US in the root of the USB flash drive, and copy the following file to it: %windir%\system32\en-US\repair-bde.exe.mui

Step 4: Open a Command Prompt window

    1. Use the Windows 10 DVD/USB to start the computer.

    2. Select the appropriate language settings, and then click Next.

    3. At the bottom of the Install Windows page, click Repair your computer.

Follow the steps until you receive the option to click Choose a recovery tool, and then click Command Prompt.

Step 5: Determine which drives are present

    1. Verify that all the appropriate drives are connected to the computer. These connections include the external drive to which you want to copy the recovered data and the USB flash drive on which the BitLocker Repair Tools files are located.

    2. At the command prompt, type diskpart, and then press ENTER.

    3. At the diskpart prompt, type list volume, and then press ENTER.

Hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to reply in case you face any other issues with Windows in future.

Need to turn off Bitlocker to install Windows 10

    Hi,

We suggest doing the following steps again to resolve the issue. To complete the procedure, make sure that you have the following information:

    • You must be able to provide administrative credentials.
    • The drive must be BitLocker-protected.
To suspend BitLocker Drive Encryption on an operating system drive, please follow the steps below:

    • Click Start, click Control Panel, click
System and Security, and then click BitLocker Drive Encryption.
    • Click Suspend Protection for the operating system drive.
    • A message is displayed, informing you that your data will not be protected while BitLocker is suspended and asking if you want to suspend BitLocker Drive Encryption.
    • Click Yes to continue and suspend BitLocker on the drive.

Let us know how it goes.

extend bitlocker protection with pin, usb pen drive, or TPM

Hi, I was reading elsewhere, and not covered by this guide, that I could extend bitlocker protection with a pin and even an usb pen drive in addition to the key stored in the tpm. Is there a simple step by the step guide that shows you how to do this correctly? I was briefly looking at different settings in the local group policy editor and found some relevant options, however, I don't want to try to turn it on without having some guidance. Thank-you.
