How can I access music in Windows Media Player that has a red cross next to it?

My computer crashed recently and I was told I had lost everything. I then went to computer recovery expert who managed to retrieve 95% of data back, but it's all scrambled and in the wrong places. My music eventually ended up back in Windows Media Player, but some of the music had red crosses against the songs and won't play. The message reads "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file". Any music that doesn't have a cross, plays fine. When I originally "ripped" the CD's, I didn't use MP3, but the default Windows mode. I've been told Windows owns the music now and I can

    Windows Media Player.

    Hi,

Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community.

I would suggest you to check the ‘Windows Media Player’ settings from the steps below.

    1. Open the ‘Windows Media Player’, in the player ‘Library’, click on ‘Organize’.
    2. Select ‘Options’, this will open the ‘Options’ window for the ‘Windows Media Player’.
    3. Click on the ‘Library’ tab, please confirm if the ‘Retrieve additional information from the Internet’ is checked, check the options ‘Rename music files using rip music settings’ and ‘Rearrange music in rip
music folder, using rip music settings’ under ‘Automatic media information updates for files’. Click on ‘Apply’.
    4. Click on the ‘Player’ tab and check the option ‘Connect to the Internet’. Click on apply.
    5. Restart the ‘Windows Media Player’ and check if it works out for you.
    Hope it helps.

  3. New Windows Media Player Plugin for Firefox

Anyone who uses Windows Vista and Mozilla Firefox may be pleased to hear that the Windows Media Player team has now released a plugin for Firefox that should allow the browser to play WMP content on websites. Here are the steps to get it working:
    • Installation of the Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin may require administrative access to your PC. It is recommended that you close all other open browser windows before continuing with the installation.
    • Click the Install button to automatically download and install the Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin.
    • Depending on your security settings, you may see a Security Warning dialog box. Click Install to install the plugin.
There is a known issue if you are using Firefox version 2.0.0.3 on Windows Vista with the installer failing with error code -203. To work around this simply restart Firefox (you will get a notification that Windows Vista will be changing the Firefox compatibility settings) and then install again - the second time should succeed.

The download is available here, and the new plugin works on all versions of Windows XP and Windows Vista (although it is mostly intended for Vista, as that currently has no WMP support in Firefox).

  4. How can I access music in Windows Media Player that has a red cross next to it?

    Windows Media Player

Am using Windows Media Player for first time to create show of photo images. Was playing whole list but now shows error and stops. In the list the first few photos files have a red cross against them. I have tried removing these but the software then marks
the next first group of photo files with another set of red crosses. all was running correctly before.
