Windows 10: How can I access windows remote desktop from another network?

I have Windows 10 pro on my PC and I would like to access it remotely on my Macbook from another location. I have remote desktop enabled on my PC and I have the Microsoft Remote Desktop app installed on my mac. Everything works fine when I am using the same wifi network - I can access my PC from my mac no problem. The thing is, I want to take my macbook with me to other locations where I will be using a different wifi network.

When I try to use remote access using a different network, it says "unable to connect".

How can I get remote access to work when I'm somewhere else using a different network? Is there a relatively straightforward way to set this up? There must be because people do this all the time with work and travel, etc.

Remote Desktop

Okay guys need some help here before going crazy...
I am trying to setup a remote desktop connection and see exactly what the logged on user is looking at with out going through Windows Remote Desktop.

Since its local network I don't have any password or want to setup a password.

Any suggestions are appreciated

Is it on your LAN? If so why not use Windows' built-in Remote Desktop Protocol?

That's what I do with my headless server and VMs.

I even use it to access my server from anywhere in the country when I travel through an OpenVPN connection I have to my network.

If you don't need the features and thus overhead of extra remote software, RDP is an excellent and easy choice for LAN. With a little effort and networking comprehension, WAN-side RDP access is good as well!

Remote Desktop Connection problems


Have you tried Remote Desktop Connection, to connect from your Windows 10 laptop to your Windows 7 desktop? Try it first, post back and tell how it went.

Some additional help because you mentioned you are a remote newbie *Wink. The windows 7 related tutorials from our sister site the Seven Forums:

1. On Windows 7 desktop, set network location to either Home or Work (I recommend Work):

2. On Windows 7 desktop, allow incoming remote connections:
   • Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) - Network - Windows 7 Help Forums
3. On Windows 7 desktop, find out its IP address:

4. On Windows 10 laptop, start the Remote Desktop application and connect to the Windows 7 desktop using the IP address from step 3 above (see Part Three in the tutorial):
   • RDC - Connect Remotely to your Windows 10 PC - Windows 10 Forums
   • Notice that although the tutorial is written for Windows 10, it also applies to Windows 7

Try the above, post back how it went.
