Windows 10: How can I activate Windows 8.1 on a new Hard Drive using BIOS embedded product key?

My Asus laptop Hard Drive crashed. I had to replace it. I have the product key from BIOS. After installing a new SSD HD, I created a bootable disc with Windows 8.1 and installed it on the new HD. The product key I have which is on the motherboard and embedded in BIOS does not work with the edition of WIndows I downloaded from the Microsoft Website so I am unable to activate my Windows 8.1. Where do I get a disc image for the Windows version that my laptop originally came with? I tried downloading and installing every version of Windows 8.1 that Microsoft offers and only Windows 8.1 Single Lang

You haven't lost it.

It's embedded in the BIOS, not the hard drive.

With Windows 8/8.1 The Product Key on preinstalled Operating Systems (HP, Acer, etc) is embedded in the BIOS in the Motherboard, so that the lost and/or worn C.O.A. Sticker problem is no more.

When you reinstall it will pick up the Product Key and activate the system automatically.

To Activate Windows 8.1 by Phone

1. Do step 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 below for what you would like or able to do.

2. Press the Windows

+ R to open the Rusluisn dialog, type
slui.exe 4, press Enter, and go to step 7 below.

3. Open an elevated command prompt, type
slui.exe 4, press Enter, and go to step 7 below.

4. Open the Power Users Tasks menu, click/tap
on System, and go to step 5A below.

5. Open the Control Panel (icons view), and click/tap
on the System icon.

A) Click/tap on Activate Windows at the bottom right corner under
Windows activation, and go to step 7 below. (see screenshot below)

6. Open PC settings, click/tap on
Activate Windows on the left side.

Product Key in Bios

I always thought that Windows 10 was using the Windows 8/8.1 product key embedded in the bios for activation. I recently installed Windows 10 on a hp tablet PC that originally had Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 was automatically activated so I though it was
using the Windows 8/8.1 Product Key in it's BIOS for activation.
