    So I am working on a laptop that has refused to boot or repair even after trying several options like cmd prompts and reset PCwith files kept .The PC will not reset and also windows repair doesn't work as it says it is unable to repair. So I intend to reinstall the windows from a bootable drive. I have installed the windows on the drive but I am scared that I my loose my files. Does anyone have a way I could backup my files before I continue?

    • What is the make and model of your computer?

    I suggest you check if you are able to boot into Windows Recovery Environment using installation media. Follow the steps provided below and check.

      • Insert the installation USB and boot Windows 10 from it.
      • In the ‘Windows setup’ page select the ‘language to install’, ‘Time and currency format’ and the ‘keyboard or input method’ and click on ‘next’.
      • Click on ‘Repair your computer’ and select ‘Troubleshoot’.
    Check if you are able to boot to this window. If you are unable to boot to this window, I suggest you to contact the manufacturer and check.

    • How are you trying to back up the data?
    • Did you make any changes in prior to this issue?
    • Do you gat any error code on the screen?
    I suggest you to try few of the below troubleshooting steps and check if it helps.

    Step 1: I suggest you to start Volume Shadow Copy service
    and set it to Automatic.

    Steps to Start the service and set it to automatic:

    • Press Windows Key + R on the keyboard and type
      services.msc
      , Services window gets opened.
    • Search for Volume Shadow Copy service, right click on it and click on
      Properties.
    • Start the service, set
      Startup type to Automatic.

    Step 2: I suggest you to perform clean boot to avoid any third party software conflict and check.
