Windows 10: How can I change the Microsoft administrator to a new one without the password?

Not sure how, but my previous work email got setup as the administrator for Microsoft account so I cannot add or change to a local one. I'm going to Setting>Accounts>Family>Add Someone until it wants a password that I don't have and can't retrieve. I have the password for the overall administrator since it's a personal computer but upon start-up, it wants the pin to login into the Microsoft account that I'm not the administrator of. I have everything backed up on an external drive if I need to completely re-format the computer.

How to change local administrator password?

To change the local administrator password on Windows 11, you can follow these steps:



1. Press the Windows key + X on your keyboard and select "Windows PowerShell (Admin)" from the menu.



2. In the PowerShell window, type "net user" and press Enter. This will display a list of all the user accounts on your computer.



3. Find the account you want to change the password for and type the following command: "net user [username] *". Replace [username] with the name of the account you want to change the password for.



4. Press Enter and you will be prompted to enter a new password for the account. Type the new password and press Enter again.



5. You will be prompted to confirm the new password. Type it again and press Enter.



6. Once you have confirmed the new password, you should see a message that says "The command completed successfully."



7. Close the PowerShell window and try logging in to the account with the new password.



Note: If you are not logged in as an administrator, you may need to provide administrator credentials to change the password.

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums. In this case I suggest you to try converting your account into administrator. Follow the steps below,

1. Search for Run on
   Windows search bar.
   
2. Type netplwiz in the run window and click on OK.
   
3. It would prompt you for password of admin account, put in the password.
   
   If you have not set any password, just click on OK.
   
4. Double click on the user account you want to change and go to
   Group Membership.
   
5. Now select Administrator and click on
   Apply and OK.

HELP to Change Administrator Email on New Laptop

Hi Lian,

The email address that you are using in the Microsoft Store will be the email address that will appear as your administrator account. Signing in your son's Microsoft account in Xbox app might change the account that signed in to the Microsoft Store. That
being said, we suggest that follow these steps:

• Click on Start.
• Open Settings.
• Select Accounts.
• In the Your Info tab, Under Your
  email and accounts, click on
  Sign in with a
  local account instead.
• Enter the password for the Microsoft account to confirm that you are authorized to make the change, and then click on
  Next.
• On the Switch to a Local Account
  page, enter a temporary local user name and password.
• Click on Next to sign out from the Microsoft account and sign back in using the new local account password.
• Go back to Accounts, and this time, click on Sign in a Microsoft account instead.
• Fill up the information needed.

This step will change the email account linked on your administrator account. If you will let your son play on the Xbox app again, we suggest that you
create a separate user account for him.
