Windows 10: How can I control when Windows Updates downloads occur?

I know this question has been asked several times before, but as far as I have read it has never been never answered definitively, so because all the threads seem to be locked I'm going to ask it again.


My PC slows down considerably for HOURS when a Windows download is occurring. Browser response time goes from 1-2 secs to 5-10 secs for just a simple Google search query.


I'm computer literate enough to be able to find my way around windows resource monitor to pinpoint an offending program, and one rarely shows up, because the activity is mostly under "System" and involves network and disk activity. Yesterday was very slow and I know the download is the culprit because this morning I got the "pending windows update" message. I know I can then control when the actual update occurs, and that generally is not a problem. And it's usually not a one day event. I suspect because right now I'm seeing Microsoftedgepdate.exe running that more downloads are occurring today.


So why can't I instruct Windows to only do these downloads during off-peak hours when I'm not working doing time critical stuff. You may respond that it only occurs infrequently, maybe monthly, but on those days when it occurs, it seriously impacts my ability to work productively.

^This, then reboot and go to manually update windows. Find KB3035583 in the list of available updates, right-click and "Hide this update" so it doesn't get installed again next go around.

To stop the download, uninstall the KB3035583 update (under "Control Panel > Windows Update > Installed Updates").


To get rid of the C:\$Windows.~BT folder:

• Right-click on your C: drive.
• Select "Properties".
• Click on [ Disk Cleanup ]
• After the initial scan: If you have a [ Clean up system files ] button, click it and wait for the second scan to finish.
• Scroll down the list and look for "Temporary Windows installation files" (its size should be in the gigabytes range); check the box.
• Click on [ OK ] to start the clean-up.

 

Who's downloaded the Windows 8.1 preview update?

For some reason the installer says the update is not applicable to your computer? (Win 8 Pro x64) anyone else try this what was released today?

EDIT: It appears the error is because the download is named Windows8-RT-KB2849636-x64 so looks like it's only for ARM based RT Windows 8 versions even though there's nothing suggesting that on the actual download page, so where's the x86 8.1 update people?
