Windows 10: How can I delete a Public Desktop shortcut without deleting the linked program?

When trying to delete some application shortcuts while running as a standard user, I receive a UAC prompt asking me for admin credentials to delete the linked program file rather than the shortcut .lnk file itself. e.g.How can I delete only the shortcut file?

Desktop shortcuts

Shortcuts can "live" in two places:

• In your own profile folder (C:\Users\Luke\Desktop). They are visible to you only.
• In the public profile folder (C:\Users\Public\Desktop). They are visible to all users.

You should now know why the deleted shortcut disappeared from both desktops.

Deleting a shortcut does NOT delete the file or folder it refers to. I recommend you run some tests to confirm this.

 

Desktop shortcuts for deleted programs now are back on desktop

I see shortcuts on my desktop that have reappeared for programs no longer installed and some that are already installed. When I put my mouse over the Icon it has no effect I can't select it to delete it.

One is the browser Opera. I checked programs, appdata, etc. Nothing listed?

Malawarebyres is already installed and a second shortcut now appears and it has no effect. Something corrupt? How can I fix my desktop

1. Do you get any error when you try to delete the file?

2. Did you create this file? What is the file extension?

3. Can you send us a screenshot of the shortcut?

I would suggest that you follow the method below and check if you are able to delete the said file.

1. Open C: Drive and navigate to Users.

2. Here under your Users > Username > Desktop > check if you find the shortcut.

3. Also navigate to Users > Public > Public Desktop and try to delete the said shortcut.
