Windows 10: How can I download a free vers of Win10 to a desktop computer? This is giving me a big...

Win 7 as you know can no longer be updated. I don't use this desktop for my daily use but for other connection purposes. Due to a lot a medical problems I let it slip my mind that this was on Win 7 instead of 8 not much of an excuse but did intend of upgrade it. I searched suggestions that mostly kept taking me back to Settings/Privacy/Update which proved to be fruitless. I'm not a techie thought surely there would be a way to download 10 w/o need of a key or license since it's soon going away. You're my last hope before having to buy another computer to replace this. Win10: windows update stuck at never ending loop ?

When in win10:

• Update&security -> Windows update -> Finding update... .... .... ....

Planning to download the latest Win10.ISO (vers.1803) and manually update:
- Then wait that my ordered new SSD arrives and clone the old HDD to it.

How does one deal with -- the Win10 Ver 1803 update -- KB4023057 problem?

My sincerest thanks first of all, for your thorough and well-presented reply. I have studied your entire solution carefully, and I note that it mirrors what HP Support did over those 90 minutes by remote control of my laptop. After the Media Creation Tool,
download, etc. ( aseries of steps) there was a step with a screen that had the big words: WHAT NEEDS YOUR ATTENTION. Underneath this banner, one issue was listed: Intel Audio Display (KB4465877) as having stability problems with Win10 Ver 1809. At this
point, and because of this warning about KB4465877 specific to my laptop, HP Support advised me not to proceed with updating/upgrading (by forced installation) Ver. 1809, and to wait until Microsoft releases a correct Ver 1803.

It was at this point that I felt "lost", since it is unlikely Microsoft will issue a fix just for my laptop. However, based on your reply and some other websites I've read since, this Ver 1803 update seems like it is widespread -- I thought it happened
only on my HP ENVY 17 laptop and ones like it.

I am sorry to report back "bad news". I just wanted to see a clean, correct fix, as having an "unsuccessful" or "failed" update leaves me with the lasting impression that my laptop's Win10 is not in good order.
