Windows 10: How can I fix headphones to work for recording audio on my laptop?

Ok, so I have recently acquired some wired Sony Headphones that work fine for outputting audio from my laptop and all other devices. However, when I attempt to record audio with these headphones plugged in, the sound is a lot quieter than when I record without them plugged in even though microphone has been kept under input in settings for both. Have attempted fixes, but Windows 10 settings aren't recognising my headphones even though they recognise my previously connected S2 Headphones, so troubleshooting or anything similar is not possible currently; any fixes since I am recording over instrumentation and no headphones will mean that I won't be heard properly due to the backing track being played alongside my input and the original track?

• Select Recording Audio.
• Follow the steps to troubleshoot Recording Audio.

Method 1: Hardware Troubleshoot

Windows 10 has a built-in troubleshooter to check and fix issues with recording. I would suggest you to run this troubleshooter to check if the issue is with your recording.

Refer these steps:

• Press Windows key +X, select
  Control panel
• Change the view by option on the top right to
  Large icons
• Click on troubleshooting and click on the
  view all option on the left panel
• Run the Recording Audio troubleshooter

I suggest you to install all the latest audio and Display drivers from the manufacturer web site and install.

Headphone not working when connected to laptop

We understand that your headphone isn’t working when connected to your laptop . We will be glad to help you with this.

To assist you better, do let us know if your speaker works fine when you unplug the headphone.

Sometimes this issue could occur when you don’t set your headphone/speaker to default.

Please follow the steps below to set your headphone as the default device for audio.

1. Right click on the speaker icon on the notification area (right bottom corner of your screen).

2. Click on “playback”

3. Check if the headphone is listed there, if so, right click
on it and choose enable.

4. Highlight the headphone and click on "Set as Default".

Once you are done with the steps, repeat step 1 and select volume mixer. Please make sure that all the volumes are turned up to the highest and check if it works.
