Windows 10: how can i fix my laptop's wireless casting to smart tv not functioning

i've tried using the wireless cast on my laptop to my smart tv. whenever it connects, my laptop screen goes all black and the tv goes from connected to disconnected immediately. and when my laptop screen turns back on, the projection options shows that it's selected on "second screen only". also, may be important to include, before i can change it to duplicate instead of second screen only, the tv immediately disconnects in just seconds of being connected, not even casting my screen. how do i fix this?
