How can I get windows 10 to restore to the date I want?

When I attempt to restore, I am prompted to provide an "event" rather than a date to restore back to. With previous versions of Windows, a calendar was given from which one picked a specific date. Now, when I follow through with restore, it only restores back to the date that I am attempting on. Is there something I am missing?

    :)

Hi Joyce. I'm Greg, a volunteer installation specialist and 8 year WIndows MVP here to help you.

If you don't have enough Restore Points to choose from, then click on the C drive to Configure more space apportioned to these points:

    http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/computing/how-t...

Periodically check on these settings because Windows 10 Updates can turn them off and version Updates reset them, another of many annoyances.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

How can I get windows 10 to restore to the date I want?

Hi Writer, Welcome to Ten Forums. First thing to ask is did you turn on system restore points. It's turned off by default. This is from the tutorial System Restore Windows 10 . If you created a restore point on demand you can label it that is probably what is being asked for.

Thanks for the info, John C. and thanks for the tutorials, Shawn. I created a System Restore Point and then did a System Restore, but it did not work. The problem might be with the "description" I gave for the Restore Point. I wrote "11/07/2015 Six days ago." When the Restore was finished, it read: System restored to 11/13/2015 2:15 PM. In effect, it did not restore the system to the point I had described. The date it gave is the exact date and time that I initiated the system-restore process.

Can someone give me some examples of the type of "description" for a System Restore Point that Windows 10 is looking for?

The problem I am having, by the way, is that I allowed a download; however, along with the download came some software that is automatically bringing up full-page ads to my monitor. These various ads come one right after the other. Additionally, some pop-ups stay in the center of my screen so that I cannot do anything. This happened on Monday, 11/09/2015 at about 2:00 pm.

I am now using another computer to post this because the other one is practically inoperable when I try to go online.
    Thanks for your help.

You had to manually create a restore point. When you do you fill in this box

How can I get windows 10 to restore to the date I want? [IMG]

that is the description that is being asked for. Windows will automatically create restore points when it runs the installer. To find out if you have any restore points created type restore point in the search box and click on create a restore point in the list.

How can I get windows 10 to restore to the date I want?

Thanks for your response, John C.
I provided another description: I wrote: "Monday 11-09-2015 Unwanted Software Downloaded"
I ran the system restore and again, when it finished, it read: "System restore completed successfully. The system has been restored to 11/14/2015 11:35 AM. Your documents have not been affected."

Just as the last few times, it tells me that it has restored to the same time that I did the system restore. This, of course, does not seem logical. The idea is to restore to a date prior to the date that one does the system restore. I must say that I find this confusing. And it wasn't restored to a prior time; the same unwanted ads still appear.

Concerning the "description" again: are there some certain words or numbers (dates) that Windows is looking for. The descriptions that I provide clearly are not resulting in the desired effect.

On a second point: I tried accessing the website that you provided, John C. : How to remove Adware, Pop-up Ads and Redirects from Web Browser however, I was not able to access it on the problem computer.

Thanks again for your comments. Is it possible that my system restore software has been affected by the malware that has invaded my computer?

You can only go back to a restore point you (or the system) has already made. If you want to restore to 11-09 before you installed something you had to have made a restore point then. You can't make one today for some point in the past.

The descriptions are only to help you remember what it is.

    Thanks a million lx07:
Evidently, I have been trying to do something that is impossible. With your information, at least now I know where I stand: I've got a big problem. Perhaps you, lx07, or John C. or Shawn can advise me as to what my options are in light of what you have told me. I have malware on my computer that is heavily disrupting its performance. Microsoft Defender evidently has not been able to eliminate this malware. I also am not able to access additional anti-virus software because of the malware.

I must admit that I am a rookie at matters like this. I am not a part of the computer generation; I am 73 years old, and I have to rely on young guys like you to bail me out of trouble.

From what I understand, there is a "recovery" option whereby one has to copy all of the software one wants to save to an external hard-disk or possibly to a flash-drive and then "dump" the hard-disk and then copy the saved software back to the hard-disk. Is that what I have to do now?

As for the future: how can I create "system restore points" so that I will be able to use them in the future?

I must say that I am surprised that Microsoft would manufacture a disk-operating system that does not allow one to select a date in the past to restore the system to. As I recall, previous editions of Windows have had this capability. Is the user informed at some point that the user must create "system restore points" in anticipation of having to use them in the future? I don't recall having seen any instructions from Microsoft concerning this matter.

Thanks again, lx07, for informing me.

You have two browsers on your computer. One is edge, the E next to the search box. The other is internet explorer. It can be found in Start > all apps>windows accessories. Open the one that is not having the pop up problem and try to go here How to remove Adware, Pop-up Ads and Redirects from Web Browser . Go through the list. It should help you get rid of the malware.

Thanks for the info, John C.:

I found Internet explorer, but the malware is there too. (It is also on Microsoft Edge.)

I accessed MalwareTips. I uninstalled most of the new programs, but after a while they reappear. I cannot uninstall one of them at all: NowUSeeItPlayer.

Is there another alternative to uninstalling the new software? The Malware that got on my computer is relentless and very clever; I don't think that I am going to be able to get rid of it with Malwaretips.

I have spent five days trying to gain some ground against this Malware, but I haven't been able to get anywhere.

Is it possible to just delete everything from the C Drive and start over again? Can I copy the software I will need to an external hard-disk or a flash-drive and then re-load it to the C Drive?

I might have to find a Microsoft Techy to make a house-call to solve this problem.

    Thanks again for your help.

How can I get windows 10 to restore to the date I want?

You could try a repair install/ in place upgrade. From the tutorial forum. Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade . But before you do that why don't you start a new thread in the antivirus, firewall system security forum. See what they can come up with.

Thanks for the Info, John C.:

I'll do as you suggest: I'll start a new thread on Sunday in the anti-virus/firewall forum to see if they can help. If not, I'll try the repair/install in-place upgrade.

You've been a big help; thanks again.
