  2. F: partition

Microsoft is aware that previously-hidden partitions are improperly being assigned drive letters after installing the April 2018 Update. As a result, they now appear in Disk Management and File Explorer. These partitions are typically recovery partitions
used by the Windows Recovery Environment or by the Original Equipment Manufacturer. It is not recommended that you attempt to delete or reformat these partitions as this may have adverse effects on your ability to recover Windows. Microsoft is currently working
to address the issue in a future Windows Update, and we’ll update this thread when a solution becomes available.

(Update 5/14/18: The solution that will soon be released via Windows Update will only prevent this issue from occurring for devices that install the April 2018 Update after the solution is released. If you've already installed the April 2018 Update and are
experiencing this issue, you'll need to follow the steps below if you want to hide these partitions.)

Although you can safely ignore these partitions, if you prefer do away with the low disk space warnings and hide the partitions so they no longer appear in File Explorer, you can do so by manually removing the partition’s assigned drive letter. To do this:

    1. Select the Start button, type cmd and then right-click Command Prompt in the search results and select Run as administrator.

    2. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type diskpart and press Enter.

    3. Type list volume and press Enter.

    4. Make note of the volume number for the drive letter you want to remove. For example, if the drive letter you want to remove is Drive “F”, note the volume number for Drive F.

    5. Type the following command, and press Enter.

    select volume <volume number>

When typing this command, in place of <volume number>, substitute the volume number you made note of in Step 4. In the example above, if the volume number for drive F is 5, you would type: select volume 5

    6. Type the following command and press Enter.

    remove letter=<drive letter>

When typing this command, in place of <drive letter>, substitute the drive letter you want to remove. In this example, you would type: remove letter=F

    7. Close the Command Prompt window.

  3. F:\ is unavailable.

That's a good question. The drive mentioned is a local drive.

in the list of partitions, it only shows drives like C, D, E and G. With the exception of F.

would disconnecting it and reconnecting it work as an alternative solution?

Files on partition (F) lost after Windows 10 clean installation

    Hi,

I bought a HP laptop a month ago, with Windows 10. After a while the WiFi stopped working, it wouldn't connect to any network at all. I decided to do a clean re-installation but Windows couldn't find the Recovery files, even though the Recovery partition
was there, visible under My PC. At this stage I had the following partitions: C - with Windows, D - Recovery (as it was when purchased), E - CD/DVD Drive and
F - Storage, a partition which I had created in Disk management by dividing the C partition in half, in order to save my documents there and keep the C partition clean, just with Windows, as I've always done in the past 15 years. On partition
F - Storage I saved a few folders including video files and photos.

Since the Recovery sequence didn't work, I downloaded the Windows 10 .iso file from the Microsoft website, burnt a DVD and did a clean installation. This is something I did many times before on previous Windows versions (XP, Win 7, Win 8), never had any
problems. I formatted partition C, where Windows was installed and installed a fresh copy of Windows 10. All good, installation finished, opened File Explorer and big surprise: I was only left with just two partitions,
C - Windows and D - Storage (keeping the same name I gave it but with the letter changed from F to D). On partition D - Storage, most of my files (mainly jpg files - very important for me) had disappeared,
except for one folder, which was still there, including a lot of video files which were untouched (and not important!).

I went to Disk Management and saw that the Recovery partition is still there but hidden, I can't see it under My PC, but this doesn't matter.

What is the explanation for this? How was it possible for my files to be deleted selectively during a clean Windows 10 install and how come the partition is still there, but with a different letter?

Obviously, I didn't format that partition by mistake, as sometimes it happens to some people, as it's still there, with the same name I gave it and still including documents that I had saved prior to re-installation.

    Thank you.
