Windows 10: How can I lookup one of my files in backup without restoring the system?

Windows 11 offers as the sole alternative to view my files in backup if I restore the system to that backup. I don't want this because I made several changes in my system after the backup I am interested in. But I need to retrieve one of my personal files that was lost. The Microsoft person of the chat I had informed that Windows does not have this capability. Is there a means to resolve the issue, perhaps with an external tool?

I saved my backup to a USB drive before system restore. I can see the files now that the restore is complete, but cant open anything or identify where the files I want to restore are located in the long list of files

I was going by other advice and articles that suggest that backing up under Update and security/backup is now the way to go. I will try your suggestion.

Backup utility

Cobian backup will do file backups locally or to ftp, with or without encryption and compression. However it doesn't do image backups, which is really what you need if want to fully restore your system.

I've used the W7 back up program and Acronis a few times to restore a system and both work great. With Acronis though, you need to burn the recovery cd they suggest FOR EACH and EVERY machine you use it on.

One problem with W7 backup is that seems to break easily. On one machine I did an upgrade re-install and the backup utility doesn't work. No luck in trouble shooting it either. So I now rely on Acronis exclusively for image backups. But I use Cobian for file backups to ftp.
