Windows 10: How can I prevent recurrence of loss of all documents during backups?

Every time my computer updates, I lose everything stored in My Documents. On two occasions, I have also lost documents stored in One Drive, which were eventually recovered. In looking at the community questions, this has been an ongoing problem for years. I do try to back up to One Drive, but it has not proven fail safe, either.


How can it be prevented? The community questions seem to focus on retrieval, but my question is how can I prevent this from happening again? The retrieval methods do not generally work for me. I have tried each numerous times with each instance, and I have never retrieved anything stored on my computer. I have resorted to trying to email myself everything I do as an additional backup, which is fairly absurd in today's world.

Ex_Brit: whether is it the wisest thing - I do not know. No clear answer. It is part of regular maintenance of my home systems. And I only try to answer question in subject of this thread: "How can I prevent automatic updates?"

I think the procedure is difficult for regular users. But not too dangerous: all steps are easily reversible which is documented. None of the commands given can "brick" system. And afaik this is the only way how to re-gain control over update process in Windows 10. For many people, it is essential.

Can you confirm you are stuck at 'Step 4...' If so, you should be seeing this...




When the 'Check names' button comes back saying it can't be found it may be down to a spelling mistake. First check that 'Select the object type:' includes 'Group' - if not, click the 'Object types...' button and tick Groups. 'From this location:' should be the name of your PC. Try typing administrators again.

If it still cannot be found, click the 'Advanced...' button. Again, make sure Groups is included in the object types then click the Find Now button. You should get a list of groups from which you can choose Administrators.
