Windows 10: How can I receive a Text on a landline

Hello is there any way for me to receive a verification code text from a landline phone number?I'm trying to log in into my account. I had this phone number linked to my account back in the 2017 or 2018 when I first made it and I could receive a call. Now I don't know why they removed this option. I just want to log in back to my account to reset my PIN because I'm receiving this error message after a silly update: 0x0000225

Text messages to a landline - account recovery

I’m seeing a recurring problem with account recovery on Microsoft IDs (I run a computer support company focused on home users). This is causing serious security problems and is entirely down to Microsoft making a foolish decision (which they can reverse).



Microsoft used to allow people to set up a recovery option of a landline phone number that used a robotic voice to read out the recovery code (Google, Apple, and many others still have this facility). Microsoft dropped the ability to make voice calls and now sends text messages instead.



Here’s the killer problem: lots of people can’t receive text messages on their landline phones because their provider does not offer that service.



Microsoft has created a dead-end. Those people were able to create and validate a recovery option with a landline phone, but now they can’t use it. In fact, they would be better off if they had never created it in the first place, as now Microsoft will not let them do anything with the account, even if they know the password.



I have yet another case I’m working on today. The client had his Hotmail account hacked (phishing hacking). I can’t change the password for him because the Microsoft site wants to send him a text message on his landline phone and he can’t receive text messages on his landline phone. The best I can do is request a replacement of the security information, which won’t happen for 30 days. The criminal has already used the access to compromise the client’s Facebook account as well, trying to stop it from spreading to other accounts, which is hard.



For 30 days the criminal has unrestricted access to the client’s emails and we can’t do anything about it.



Come on Microsoft. You have created this problem. You have to reinstate the ability to get the codes via a robotic voice. Maybe don’t allow new accounts to be set up this way, but at least honor the ones you previously validated.

 

How do I get around a landline being the number used to text code to?

I want to update my security information but what is currently set is a landline phone number. The only option provided in updating security settings is for microsoft to text a code to the number provided. Again, it is a landline and cannot receive texts. How do I get around this? There doesn't seem to be other options.

 

Grandparents Account Locked 2FA set to Landline

Good morning,

My grandparents have locked the Microsoft account and are unable to receive the 2FA code. Apparently they got confused when setting 2FA and entered their landline which can't receive text messages. I'm not seeing any other option to send the code to their email for verification.

Account recovery seems to be denied because 2FA was enabled. What next steps can we take?
