Windows 10: How can I rectify downloaded files automatically being linked or associated with PDF or ZIP?

Hi. When I download a file, the file is automatically trying to open in a pdf format or .zip format. Usually I'm able to change this by right clicking the file and use the "open with" tab. However. I have a payroll software that requires updating, and the file extensions are in .WEQ. These files are also automatically saved in PDF or ZIP format. But I cannot use the right click and "open with" tab on these files because I do not have an associated program to open them with. And when I copy these files into the required file location that should update my payroll software, it's not updating bec

File is supposed to be a Zip file, but it is being read as a pdf

Hi Nick,

The reason why your .zip files are read as .pdf file is because of incorrect file association.

To resolve this issue, follow the steps below:

• Click Start, click the Settings button, click
  Apps, and then click Default apps.
• Scroll to the bottom and click the link to Choose default apps by file type.
• Scroll down to .zip and click the program listed in the right column.
• Click your preferred zip program to select it and then close the open window.

Can't make zip file association

There is a tutorial here on TF for resetting the default file associations. It may help. You can't, under your current issue, download the whole file, because it is a Zip file. Kinda a Catch 22. But scroll down till you see the one for Zip, and download the .reg file and merge it (click it). I've also posted it here, if you want, along with the link to the tutorial.

We suggest that you save the PDF files on your device and check if the issue persists. You may also want to associate the PDF files to Microsoft Edge as the default program to make sure that you have a default application that will open all of your PDF files.
Here are the steps:

• Search for Default Programs.
• Go to Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
• Select the .pdf file type and then click the Change program button on the upper right of the
  Set Associations window.
• Choose Microsoft Edge and then click OK.
