Windows 10: How can I stop W10 from downloading and installing updates?

Yeah, I know, I know: "If you don't update, world will end." But in fairness, my experience is that about a third of the time the updates are buggy. Also, many updates don't apply to my situation but the damn things install ANYWAY. And finally, the long re-boot times as the thing takes 20 minutes to install the things. So I want to kill 'em--all. I've tried disabling "updates" in Services. Didn't help. Running 10 on a brand-new Gateway laptop with 512 G of SSD, 16 MB of ram. Should be a screamer of a machine. Unfortunately ***support from Gateway is almost nonexistent!*** No ma

Stop automatic windows update

@ W10 Tweaker:

1. In Explorer navigate to Windows > System distribution > Download. Right click and choose properties. Security tab > edit> deny System write access. Ok and agree with the warnings. Leave the properties window open
2. Check for updates. You'll get the list but with a "failed to install"
3. Download the ones you want from the Microsoft update catalog.
4. Pause updates (or the darn thing will start updating as soon as you do the next step)
5. Remove the Write > deny
6. Install updates from wherever you have downloaded them.
7. Reset the write > deny
8. Create a task to remind you to check for updates (for example open a notepad document with these steps) and follow steps 2-7.

Currently playing with disabling the network adapter during the manual update. Can't make up my mind if it's easier or not. The point is: if Windows Update can't write to the Software Distribution > Downloads folder, all updates will fail. But you still get the list and can choose what to install and what to skip. No third party software but a bit of extra time.

 

Stopped W10 Install - now can't update W7!

In order to remove Windows 10, we need to uninstall the KB3035583 from the installed updated. So I suggest you to check if you have the KB3035583 in your installed update list and uninstall it.

  In search tab type “programs and feature” and press enter.
  
• 
  In left side click on view installed updates.
  
• 
  From the list search for the recent updates and find the KB3035583.
  
• 
  Select the KB article and uninstall it.
  

Also, I would suggest you to turn off the automatic updates to stop the notifications.

How to stop an update download


The other day I connected a TomTom satnav to a usb port to check it for problems for a friend.

The next day Win10 reported an update for TomTom was ready to download and install.

There does not appear to be any way to stop this happening.

Can anyone suggest how I can stop the download and install of this.
