How can I tell if the Windows Defender warning about an Excel macro file is correct?

I have a library of Excel macros in an xlam file. I have not touched the file for over a year, during which time I have had three different antivirus packages installed and none of them identified a problem with the file. Today I wanted to email the file to someone else and when I dragged it into the email, Windows Defender popped up saying there is an exploit Win32/CVE-2017-11882!ml in the file. I'm skeptical of there actually being a virus in the file; I think Windows Defender is just being paranoid when I try to email that file type. But how can I easily find out if I'm right or if I really

    :)

Defender says I have malware running in an Excel macro but I didn't use macros

I got this message from Windows Defender Trojan:Script/Foretype.A!ml for my Excel file. I'm running Excel ver 2002. I am the author of the Excel file and I do not use Macros of any type. When I run inspect
it says I am running macros. I went to view - macros, the pop up is all blank. Went to the VB editor all pages blank.

I got the file setting not to run any macros.

Any ideas on what is going on? Has malware inserted a hidden macro?

    Thanks

  3. Ez Macros or any other Macro program

    Hi Brian,

The issue is quite unclear and too broad for us to distinguish the main reason why you are having challenges/issues in Macro. To have a better understanding of your concern, we'd like to ask you some questions:

    • Are you referring on using macros on Excel? If yes, what is the version of your Office?
    • What exact application are you using when using macros? Where did you download it?
    • What were the recent changes made on your computer before you experienced this issue?
    • What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?
    • Did you receive any error message?

Your response will be much appreciated.
