Windows 10: how can i trim / defrag my laptop?

so my laptop has a SSHD, is there any way to trim and defrag the ssd and hard drive parts?

When i open defragment and optimize disks it says " optimization not available " and it lists it as a solid state drive.

is there any way how to defrag the hdd part and trim the ssd part?

Turning OFF scheduled defrag TRIM on ssd drive stopped continual fan noise

There have been problems reported with the latest WIN 10 upgrade that apparently send the auto-TRIM (defrag) into daily activity.

This may have been the problem causing the fan on my Toshiba laptop to kick in and run continuously. But it stopped after I disabled the scheduled TRIM function.

Go to Search, type in 'defrag' to go to the utility. It it's scheduled on, turn it off.

Do a TRIM manually weekly or less. Or after a big disk cleanup after WIN updates or upgrades.

 

What's the trimming phase in Defragment and Optimise Drives?

After defragmenting and consolidating (FYI, it's the phase that packs all the files together so it keeps the files from fragmenting), I managed to find a phase called trimming.

I left my laptop to sleep while it was defragging (never really a good idea, I suppose). It loves hibernating after a while (inconvenient, you get a bonus point if you can help me figure that out). So, it hibernated while in the middle of defragging.

By accident. Not my fault.

I woke it up to find the stage, but it went by within a few seconds.

Should SSD's be defragmented


Unlike defragging, Trim on an SSD is just Trim, it doesn't matter which program initiates it the results will be exactly the same. Trim doesn't move files, trim resets storage locations on the SSD that have had data previously stored there. There are two steps required to make a storage location available on an SSD. The first step is to delete the previous data. The second step is to reset the storage location for reuse. The first step is done on-command at the moment it is required. The second step is only performed when either there are no more reset data locations available for use or periodically, hopefully during idle periods. By waiting for an idle period to do the second step, the SSD performance is increased. The second step is the trim operation.
