it is not possible to select pre-installed system icon to customise any folder/shortcut in any way such as shell32.dll or other dll or other exe file and there is no 'shell32dll' folder in window 10.i don't want to be forced to download a 3rd party icon pack and use custom icons and have 2-3 icons style mixed together as this would be visualy appaling.i seem to remember distinctly that in previous version of windows, i could set a drive folder/regular folder/shortcut to whatever the **** i wanted using pre-installed system asset or , for that matter, any dll/exe that contained icons.to alevi

    :)

  2. Is there any way to get the original icons to display again after the shortcuts are moved into a folder?

    Hi,

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community.

Please be informed, the view of files, folders, shortcuts etc. will be set to small icons by default, due to which you will not be able to see the shortcut's icon.

I suggest you to follow these steps:

    • Click on View
      menu in the menu bar.

    • Select either of these options
medium, large or extra-large icons and you will be able to see the icon of the shortcut.

In future, if you have any issues related to Windows, do get back to us. We will be happy to assist you.

  3. Desktop chrome shortcut icons turned into blank papers!!!

    Hi

    Welcome to Microsoft community.

It's possible that the antivirus app you installed, RAV endpoint protection, caused the issue with your Chrome shortcut icons turning into blank papers. Antivirus apps can sometimes interfere with the functioning of other programs, including changing the appearance of icons.

To resolve this issue, you can try the following steps:

    1. Restart your computer: Sometimes, a simple restart can fix minor issues with icons.
    2. Rebuild the icon cache: The icon cache is a database that stores the icons for all the files and programs on your computer. If the cache becomes corrupted, it can cause issues with icons. To rebuild the icon cache, follow these steps:
      • Open File Explorer and navigate to the following folder: C:\Users[Your Username]\AppData\Local
      • Locate the "IconCache.db" file and delete it (you may need to enable the option to show hidden files and folders in File Explorer settings).
      • Restart your computer.
    3. Reset Chrome shortcuts: If the issue persists only with Chrome shortcuts, you can try resetting them by following these steps:
      • Right-click on the blank paper icon and select "Properties."
      • In the Properties window, click on the "Shortcut" tab.
      • Click on the "Change Icon" button.
      • In the "Change Icon" window, click on the "Restore Defaults" button.
      • Click "OK" to save the changes.
Please note that these steps are general suggestions, and it's always a good idea to back up your important files before making any changes to your system.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any further updates, thanks.

    Best regards

    Blank shortcut icon GPU-Z

I know I am quite late but as I was scrolling through I saw this post which happened to one of friend too. This sometimes happens with Windows. Usually a reboot will solve the problem. However if this doesn't, try setting the icon for the shortcut(right-click pinned icon, right-click program, left-click properties, select "change icon...") or refreshing it by switching to a different icon, applying it, and then reverting back to the original icon. Remove the shortcut from the taskbar and replace it with the start menu shortcut or simply drag the .exe file to the taskbar.
