How can I use the maximum memory for windows? the full 8GB

Windows 10 64bit, 8gb installed, only 2 gb usable.

We need to do further investigation so that we can identify the cause of the issue. We suggest changing the maximum memory of your device and see if it helps. Follow the steps below:

• Press Windows key + R.
• Type msconfig and press OK.
• Under the Boot tab click Advanced Options.
• Check Maximum Memory and select 16384.
• Press Apply and OK.

Windows shows 8GB RAM installed but 4GB RAM is usable

Hi There,

I've just upgraded my pc from 4GB RAM to 8GB RAM. Windows seems to have detected this upgrade but why does it show as only 4GB RAM available. The following is what I have tried so far with no luck:

• I have tried the msconfig method on ensuring maximum memory is not checked.
• physically removed the new RAM and reinstalled it

Any thoughts/suggestions on how i can resolve this matter?

Is there a difference between laptop memory sticks and desktop memory

As mentioned by SIW2, desktop PCs typically use full-size DIMMs (dual inline memory modules). laptops normally use SODIMMs (small outline DIMMs). They are entirely diffent physically, and not interchangeable, even though functionally they are the same. I have no idea what "Bree" was thinking.

Is your "workstation" the laptop listed in My Computer (Dell M6800)? If so, the largest SODIMMs it supports are 8GB. With 4 memory slots, the maximum RAM in the machine would be 32 GB. (That's with an I7-4940MX CPU. With a lesser CPU, only 2 of the SODIMM sockets would be usable, for a maximum of 16 GB.)

The suggestion to go to Crucial or Kingston online is good. They both guarantee that RAM they sell for a given PC will be compatible.
