Windows 10: How can one force windws 10 2004 to use a specific video driver at install ?

I have seen similar problems in other forums.

The posted solutions are only applicable if you see something on your screen.

One of the computers I use is a Dell Dimension E521, with an old, non-supported NVIDIA video card.


I have windows 10 1909 installed, where I replaced the standard Microsoft driver by the NVIDIA 309.08 driver to be able to use the screen.


For weeks, when I checked for updates, I had an extra message that said "windows 10 version 2004 is coming, it is not yet ready for your computer, we'll show you when your system will be supported".


On august 15, update was showing that the system was ready for feature update 2004.


I attempted to install it, but after one of the boots, the screen was pitch black and I don't know how much was installed and if I could reboot into safe mode to change the driver and then, if that did not work, I might not be able to use windows.old or restore a backup.

I went back to 1909.


Of course, I could do some mechanical work and switch the video card to something windows will recognize, but I hope there is a possibility to set up install to force a video driver, that I know will work.


I am not too keen in playing with the registry to make windows install believe that I have a different configuration.


Any ideas ?

Change of message on Windows Update as regards 2004

I would suggest reading the list of Known Issues.

I was able to force install it in early June, and I tested it for a couple days before rolling back to 1909.

Microsoft apparently has now decided to block force installs.

 

No video after installing Windows10

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

This issue might be because of corrupted graphic drivers.

I suggest you to run the video troubleshooter and check if it helps.

• Type Troubleshooting in search and click
  Troubleshooting.
• In the left pane click on View all
• Select Video Playback.
• Follow the prompted steps to troubleshoot this issue.

I suggest you to update the graphics card drivers/display drivers from manufacturer website and check if it resolves the issue.

• Open Device Manager.
• Expand ‘Display Adapter’.
• Locate the display driver.
• Right-click on the display card listed and click on ‘Update Driver Software’

If issue still persists, I would suggest you to install the drivers in compatibility mode and check if it works.

Follow the steps provided below to install the drivers in compatibility mode:

• Right-click on the driver setup file and click on ‘properties’.
• Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box "Run this program in compatibility mode for” and select Windows operating system from the drop down.
• Click on ‘Apply’ and click ‘OK’ and run the file to install it.

Please reply with status of the issue for further assistance.

The Ultimate Realtek HD Audio Driver Mod for Windows 10

Hey Dj Urko, I am trying to install the realtek driver and I get the error 0x0001. I have disabled secure boot and Driver signature. I have the latest win 10 build. What am I doing wrong? Can u post the complete list of steps that I have to take? I have an asus z170 with alc1150.
