Windows 10: How can we permanently disable the Windows Backup advertisement?

None of my customers are finding the 'Windows Backup' prompts to trick them into filling up their OneDrive storage amusing, cute, or useful. Every single person finds them annoying and is bothered by Microsoft over this.How can we permanently prevent their computers from receiving this malicious advertisement from Microsoft?There was a thread from earlier today, but for some reason, Microsoft decided to lock it so no one else can give their opinion on how much they do not like this advertisement that is shoved down their throats.

Permanently Disable File History Backup

I suggest you to follow the below steps to turn off the back up and check if it helps.

• Press windows+X and click on control panel.
• Then click on “backup and restore option”.
• Then click on the option “turn on schedule”.
• Then on the left hand side you will get the option ”Turn off schedule”.

Permanently Disable Windows Defender?

Since this is a TP. The option to turn off/disable Windows Defender is grayed out. However, you can turn off by:

1. Open Admin Command Prompt and type: gpedit.msc
2. Manoeuver to: Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->Windows Components->Windows Defender
3. Double click on "Turn Off Windows Defender" and select "Enabled" then click "Apply"

WARNING: After turn off "Windows Defender", you might not be able to turn it back on. I suggest before trying this, make a backup image so you can restore to the way it was.

   • Press Windows + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
     
   • Confirm any prompts to open the Registry Editor.
     
2. Navigate to the Windows Defender Key:
   
   • Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender.
     
3. Create a New DWORD Value:
   
   • Right-click on the Windows Defender folder, select New, and then DWORD (32-bit) Value.
     
   • Name the new value DisableAntiSpyware.
     
4. Set the Value:
   
   • Double-click on DisableAntiSpyware and set its value to 1.
     
   • Click OK to save the changes.
     
5. Restart Your Computer:
   
   • Restart your computer to apply the changes. Windows Defender should now be permanently disabled.
     

Method 2: Using the Group Policy Editor (For Windows Pro and Enterprise)

1. Open the Group Policy Editor:
   
   • Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
     
2. Navigate to Windows Defender Settings:
   
   • Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Microsoft Defender Antivirus.
     
3. Disable Microsoft Defender Antivirus:
   
   • Double-click on Turn off Microsoft Defender Antivirus.
     
   • Select Enabled and click Apply, then OK.
     
4. Restart Your Computer:
   
   • Restart your computer to apply the changes. Windows Defender should now be permanently disabled.
     

Additional Steps to Ensure Permanent Disabling

• Disable Tamper Protection:
  
  • Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
    
  • Go to Virus & threat protection > Manage settings.
    
  • Turn off Tamper Protection.
