External speakers stopped working

Two days ago the external speakers (cheap Altec Lansing speakers) on my Dell laptop just stopped working. At that time, they were appearing in the device list. But I couldn't get them to work. The built-in speakers in the laptop were working. That night I restarted the computer to install some Windows updates. After restarting, the external speakers still were not working. Internal speakers are still working. Now the externals don't show at all in the list. I connected these speakers to another computer and they work fine. I connected a flash drive to the USB port to which the external speakers were connected to test the port and it works. Unfortunately, I don't have anything handy to test the 3.5m headphone jack. (These are 2-connector speakers, a USB and a 3.5.) What to do from here? Everything I read says update the driver but these speakers don't use a driver. I'm afraid if I buy new speakers it will be the same problem. Why won't my computer recognize these speakers? I can get by with the built-ins but they are so tinny-sounding.

 

External Speakers not Showing up in Playback

I have a Sony external speaker which works fine with my laptop (Windows 10) when I connect it using Bluetooth. However, I would like to use the speakers with my 3.5mm male to male jack lead, but when I plug the lead into the headphone socket on my laptop
and then the audio in socket on the speaker the laptop speaker cuts out but the sony speaker does not work.

I've checked that the cable works on another item and that the volume of the Sony speaker is not too low. Any help would be appreciated.

 

Can't get external speakers to work properly on laptop


It is common to find that different jack plugs have slightly different sizes and tolerances, and some connect better than others, and also that the sockets on laptops are subject to wear, and will lose some connectivity with one or both channels. If you can find an adapter - with a short length of cable for strain relief, and preferably an angled male plug connector - that fits well to both to the laptop and headphones, but also to external speakers, that may be a solution.

Some audio control panels allow for output to other sockets, if the audio chip is capable - for instance not only the headphone jack but also the microphone jack, which may be less worn, and may be a better connection for your speaker jacks - at the loss of an external microphone connection. This may not be an option on some laptops.

Otherwise, the socket on the laptop may need to be replaced or adjusted so that the contacts connect all of your plugs equally well - a delicate job best performed by a qualified repair technician. Laptop motherboards are quite flimsy, and movement of the jack through strain on the headphone cable etc., can cause board cracking and solder joint or copper trace failures.
