Windows 10: how do i activate my new pc with a product key from an older pc

I have a non compatible pc that I want to use it's digital product key to the new compatible computer, and how to view the product key

Product key association disable on old pc

I sold my old pc to a friend. He installed some missing parts (HDD, GPU and RAM). Then we installed Windows 10 Home 64-bit version from USB stick. I was surprised to see that windows was automatically activated after that. I did some digging and found out that it is using my product key, which i use now in my own new pc. My friend does not have his own product key, the idea was that he just uses the unactivated windows with limited features.


I uninstalled my Windows 10 product key via command prompt in friends computer (as i understand this is only local solution, if he reinstall windows or clicks the active button, it reactivates automatically with my product key) and now it says windows is not activated, but my product key is still shown with Produkey app in his pc. So far windows is still activated my own pc.


My questions:

1. Is this all i need to do?
2. How do i get rid of product key showing still with product key showing apps on my friend's computer?
3. Is there a way to get rid of association of my product key on that old pc that i sold to friend?

EDIT: I originally installed windows 10 via upgrade option from Windows 7, if that matters.

 

Windows 10 Activation - Upgrading from a older assembled PC to a new assembled PC (Non OEM)

1. Where did your brother purchase the software?

2. Was it through Microsoft Store or did he go to per se Office Depot, Office Max, WalMart, where?

• a. If he purchased through Microsoft Store during the upgrade process the software is tied to the Original Machine and not transferable.
• b. If he purchased through a retailer suchas Office Depot, WalMart, etc.. then you can safely uninstall Windows 10 from the Older PC and install it on the New PC using the Product Key that came with the software.
• It can not be installed on more than one PC unless you have a Volume License which would include multiple PC's.

3. There were cases in the past where Tech Support did assign the licenses to customers but that was a long time ago due to an issue with those that did save the option to upgrade to Windows 10 and there was a "forgiveness policy" for a period of time
when software was pirated and members unwittingly purchased it.

4. Retail Channel is a License that is OEM. I've already posted the link to the information for your benefit.

5. Go to the Old PC

Right Click on Start > Select PowerShell (Admin)

Copy/Paste this command into the window then press Enter

(Get-WmiObject -query ‘select * from SoftwareLicensingService’).OA3xOriginalProductKey

This will locate the Original Product Key on the unit.

Note the Product Key on a piece of paper.

Go to the New PC

Click on Settings > Update & Security > Windows Activation

Click > Change Product Key

Put the Windows 10 Key In

Click Activate

Follow the Prompts and verify if the unit did activate.

 

Can't activate Windows 10 on new PC with product key from older deactivated computer

Hello, I am trying to activate a new Windows 10 PC with my Windows 10 Pro product key from an older computer that I have deactivated. This is something I have done a couple of times before, so I know that it works. Although it may have been with an older
version of Windows, like 8 perhaps, the last time I did it.

I thought that once Windows was deactivated on the older machine, the product key would be free to use on a another computer. As has been the been the case when I did this in the past.

The older computer is a dual boot machine which also has Windows XP. From memory I installed Windows 10 on that machine as a free upgrade from 7 or 8, back when Microsoft had that offer running for the first year of Windows 10.

Any help would be much appreciated.
