    How do I change and cleanup my default Download location in Windows 10?


    I was following this thread: move download folder to other drive in windows 10. I made the mistake it mentions at the very start and created a location named D:\ and my downloads did end up all over the place. Now, in Properties, the location tab isn't available and D:\ cannot be changed to D:\Downloads or D:\My Downloads. My default Download folder is on the OS C: SSD drive and I want to change it to the D:\Downloads on my HDD drive. Is there any way around this?

    Can I Change My Default Desktop Location??

    Hello Lucas,

    You may change the default location for the desktop and library folders on Windows 10.

    To change the default location of the folders, please follow these steps:

    • Click Start, type This PC and press
      Enter      .
    • Right-click the Desktop folder and select Properties.
    • Go to Location tab and click Move.
    • Find the new location for the Desktop folder and click
      Select       Folder.
    • Click OK to finish.

    The steps must be done on each of the library folders.

    How do I change and cleanup my default Download location in Windows 10?

    Windows 10 forced download

    To stop the download, uninstall the KB3035583 update (under "Control Panel > Windows Update > Installed Updates").


    To get rid of the C:\$Windows.~BT folder:
    • Right-click on your C: drive.
    • Select "Properties".
    • Click on [ Disk Cleanup ]
    • After the initial scan: If you have a [ Clean up system files ] button, click it and wait for the second scan to finish.
    • Scroll down the list and look for "Temporary Windows installation files" (its size should be in the gigabytes range); check the box.
    • Click on [ OK ] to start the clean-up.
