How do I change boot order to boot from WinPE emergency CD-R?

I tried F12 when booting up PC and got a screen called Boot Menu. C drive has a plus sign beside it. I used the arrow to go down to CD rom and hit enter.

When I tried to boot from the CD disk, it still booted into Windows, and when I used F12 again C drive is the one with the plus sign. I'm not sure what the plus sign means. I only have one hard drive in this PC.

    :)

    Windows 10 Automatic Repair Loop

    Hi Mohammed:.

I am unable to boot from the CD/DVD.

I put the downloaded IOS version of Windows 10 on a DVD and changed the boot order on my HP dm4 to put the internal CD/DVD drive at the top of the boot order list. After powering the laptop, it fails to boot from the CD/DVD. What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks.

  3. Safe mode in Win 10

I did not understand all of the message Shaela.

    • Make a Lazesoft CD-ROM on any PC that works.
    • If you have a dead laptop, but it is capable of working - install Linux Ubuntu on it.

it is FREE and will work on any machine - it will give you a simple interface with Firefox Browser, internet and e-mail plus Libre Office, which is similar to MS office and does the same job - but it is free,
Once again Linux Ubuntu needs to be burned to a USB stick or a CD-ROM on a working computer - ask a friend.

Then boot from that device and install.

You can set the boot order (if it does not automatically read it) from the BIOS when it is fiorst turned on.

Google your brand and it will tell you which key to press to do this.

    It is usually:

    Delete key

    F1

    F10

and in BOOT Order set the CD-ROM or USB stick to position 1 on the boot order.

By IDIOTS, I meant the smug fools at Microsoft, not you. How can one have a n emergency mode that cannot be entered in an emergency - someone needs to be flogged on the public square at dawn!

    Thats all.

How do I change boot order to boot from WinPE emergency CD-R?

My wild guess is that your computer is UEFI -- SecureBoot and FastBoot need to be turned off. If there is a Legacy choice, maybe activate Legacy. Then, with a dvd or usb stick in the respective place [to let UEFI "find it"] -- select your first boot choice again, save and exit, reboot.

    The choices I have are:

    Floppy
    LS120 HD
    Legacy LAN
    CDROM
    ZIP
    USB-CDROM
    USB-FDD
    USB-ZIP
    USB-HDD

    And of course C drive

How do I check if my PC is UEFI ? Where in BIOS do I turn off Secure Boot and Fast boot? It's been awhile since I've done that.

    try the usb-cdrom option...
I highly question that you have that many bootable drives install in that PC, but rather those are bios boot options

Also, another question is how did you create the rescue CD? What files does it have on it? It should have a bunch of files and folders on it. If you see just the ISO file on it with the .ISO file extension, you just copied the file itself over and did not create a bootable CD from the image contained in the ISO file.

How do I change boot order to boot from WinPE emergency CD-R?

I burned the files to a CD. Perhaps I should try a DVD? (I used the files within the ISO file )

Depends on the size of the ISO file. Also, just copying over the files themselves to the CD or DVD won't make it bootable in all cases. You need to burn the image to the CD or DVD. Windows 8 and 10 will do it by right clicking on the ISO file and selecting Burn image to disc (or something similar to that). Windows 7 requires a separate program to do it.

Yes it's Windows 10 and I burned it to disk with no message to insert a second DVD because of lack of room.

I tried the DVD and it didn't work either. I'm definitely missing something here.

The motherboard manual just says to change boot order using F12.

In the Bios, highlight CD rom drive and Move it to First Boot Device. When you restart, it should say Press Any Key to Boot From CD/DVD drive. If not, then either the disc was not burned correctly, the drive is not First Boot Device, or your CD drive is not reading the disc.
Use your boot discs to boot another computer, if that works, then the disc is good, but the CD/DVD drive is not reading the disc. on the troubled computer. Try a different Optical Drive.
You can also create a USB Flash drive using the WinPE iso and Rufus, in my signature.
Then boot into Setup (Bios) in the Boot tab select the C: drive with the + next to it, and press enter to expand the category. You should see your USB flash drive listed, Move this to First Boot Device, Save and Exit.
You should see the message Press Any Key to Boot From USB.

Also, next question...exactly which "WinPE emergency CD-R" are you using? Where did you get it from?

How do I change boot order to boot from WinPE emergency CD-R?

I used F12 to get into the boot menu and chose CD-ROM and then it continued booting into windows. Are you saying to actually change the boot order in the BIOS (delete key) rather then temporarily in boot menu from F12?

I did turn off fast boot and secure boot is disabled in BIOS.

Disabling secure boot in the UEFI can cause the operating system to no longer boot. It sounds likely that the recovery disc you made uses BIOS/Legacy booting to load, but your computer was set to use secure boot.

Did you try to boot from CD-ROM and USB-CDROM?

It's possible that the recovery media did not place or burn the files correctly...may we see the contents of the disc in Windows File Explorer?

And just to rule it out...are you sure it didn't just look like it was booting back into Windows? Is it possible that the recovery disc, when booting, just looks like a regular Windows installation booting?

I don't know that this is a UEFI system. I don't see anything written under disk management.

The fast boot (sorry it's not called secure boot) in BIOS is disabled and is so by default.

The fast startup in power options is disabled when I try the rescue disk.

    I did try CD-ROM and USB CD-ROM.

Attached is a picture of the files on the CD-R

I did wait to see the desktop when it failed to boot from the CD-R
