Windows 10: How do I change my motherboard, OS help.

hello, I need help in switching my motherboard, form a gigabyte B450m to an MSI B550. I can do the job physically, where im having issues is with WIndows. I have swapped back and forth like seven times now so im really hoping ill get the help I need from this post so I can swap one last time and leave it at that. I have bought a retail copy of windows and it should be linked to my Microsoft account.


I have an SSD and a hard drive normally connected to my pc. I was able to back up my information from my SSD to my hard drive. I did a reset via windows settings "update and security" >>> "recovery" >>> "reset". Windows was uninstalled, but it also immediately began reinstalling, and I think because of this, Windows was still linked to my old motherboard. Before doing that, I even went to the CMD and did a command that should've removed the product key from the computer. I guess it didn't, because when I look in settings >>> activation, my product key is there, linked to my gigabyte motherboard.

When I switched to my MSI motherboard, it would show a windows loading screen then it would freeze every single time.

I should mention that I have my product key-code in hand from when I bought it at best buy four years ago.


I am doing something wrong. Im probably missing something or im misunderstanding something. im currently making this post from my original motherboard. I reinstalled windows, but again, onto my original motherboard. I don't want that. I want to use my new motherboard and not have to buy another copy of windows 10.


please, someone explain to me, step by step on how to switch my motherboard and keep my copy of windows 10. if you need more information let me know.

How do I change the OS?

I would suggest you to check in the system configuration if the OS is detected.

Follow the steps to check.

• Type in the search bar “System configuration”.
• Click on the boot option.

Check if the OS is detected in the boot option.

Edge Search Does Not Permit Change of Region

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community. I am glad to assist you on this.
We have reproduce the issue here and we are able to access non-regional search for google using Microsoft Edge.
I would suggest you to try the below steps and check if it helps.
Step 1:
Clear browsing data option of Microsoft Edge and check if you face the issue. To do so perform the steps below.

1. Click on the More actions icon next to the feedback icon present on top right corner of the Project Spartan homepage.
2. Select Settings and click on Choose what to clear.
3. Check the boxes Browsing history, Cookies and saved website data and Cached data and files and click on Clear.

Step 2:
I suggest you to create a new user account and check if the issue occurs.

1. Go to Settings.
2. Choose Accounts and then select Family and other users.
3. Select add someone else on this PC.
4. Enter a user name and hit next.
5. Click on Finish.
6. Sign out from the current Account and Log into the new account.

Step 3:
It could also happen because of network issue. I suggest you to try with different network connection and check if it helps.
