Windows 10: How do I check that Windows Back-up is actually working?

I just had to reload Windows 10 to solve an issue, and now !!! I find out that the Windows update to an external hard drive hasn't actually worked in over 2 years. Yes, I know the data since 2021 is gone. But short of switching to a Mac, how do I confirm that the back-ups are actually running? Since they claim success after manually initiating "back-up now", I can't rely on standard errors or status information. Hoping there's something for the simple user.
