    How do I clone a HDD Windows 10 -> windows 7?

I have one computer with Win 7 pro and recently purchased one with Windows 10. Both 64 bit. I swapped my data HDD from the win 7 computer to the one running win 10.

I now would like to clone the data HDD back to the older win 7 machine to have the information present on both machines. How do I do that with freeware or Acronis 2012?

My reason for wanting to do this is that I have a dozen or so apps that I had installed on the older computer to save space on the small SSD. Several of these will not run on Windows 10 even after trying the compatibility option.

    :)

Install Windows 10 on same computer two hard drives

Do so: install and activate the windows 10,

after then use some hdd clone program and clone partition from hdd where is the os installed and activated to another after boot from second hdd

    or

install windows on first hdd and activate,

register to insider program, and download insider windows version and install on second hdd and activate

Hard drive failing - What can I do to transfer/ clone my drive?

You can clone your Windows from drive to drive with no problems .

You do need enough space on your HDD drive to create a free space as large as your Windows C:\ drive

for the clone. The cloning tool will create the partition in the free space.

    - Make sure the HDD gets a good defrag/optimise after doing the clone.

Note that you have been running Windows on an SSD for a long time that Windows will be
    very slow loading from HDD.

I only really appreciated how much an SSD helps after cloning my Windows to a HDD for backup.

    - Macrium Reflect is highly regarded.

AOEMI Partition assistant is another good free tool ( they use the term Migrate vs clone/image )

Free Partition Manager - AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard

    - If you really want to be safe make two clones, if possible. Should lightning strike twice....

Sounded good, but it's not free now, $70 for the home single user edition.

Just downloaded the free addition you show in the link above. Haven't tried it yet. Don't know why programs web site only shows you have to pay??? Thanks for the link.

The install screen says it's a free/trial version. Don't know how long the trial lasts, or if it will work completely. I plan on getting a 1 tb SSD soon and will install the program and see how it works.

The Web is getting very greedy. You have to be very careful these days. All free programs are now using PUP's
I have always trusted Major Geeks for down loads.
You will love Macrium. If I can help you with the software, it would be my pleasure. I consider myself to be very knowledgeable of Macrium Reflect. It is highly recommended here on the forum!

  10. If you already have a drive available in an external enclosure you can try direct copy and paste of files and folders for those things that will work on 10 and see the first drive reinstalled on the 7 machine once the 10 stuff has been hand picked and copied over to the intended drive. For the second desktop here of course having a dual boot of 7 with 10 on both no less the drive in the usb enclosure is now plugged into the second machine following upgrading the size of the storage drives on the main build.

Acronis sees a free version provided by both Western Digital and SeaGate support under the Acronis WD for WD drives only and SeaTools rebranded for use on most drives. You can easily create and restore images made from any drive to the destination drive. You first need to agree to the SeaTools for Windows agreement terms on the page seen at http://www.seagate.com/support/downl...ls-win-master/

So far they show that listed as supporting upto Windows 8 as far as compatible OSs but went right onto the 64bit 10 here and immediately detected all drives present.

As you can see things here are a bit more involved when it comes to push and shove data around! *Biggrin When going to click on the Seagate Recovery Services option that will open to a new web page where you can opt to purchase a data protection plan, recover data, or try the shareware option for "Get your data yourself" in order to download the trial version of their rebranded form of Acronis True Image. I still run the 2010 Home edition of Acronis T.I. on 10 here with it seeing great results.

From that page you will end up at Seagate where you simply registry to download the free trial version of the Seagate File Recovery software package. Or you can simply provide your email address for a free 30 day trial of Acronis True Image 2016 which for me would be the need to buy Acronis here all over not having an upgrade option from the 2010. Acronis True Image 2016 | Acronis

They will simply send you the email with temp product key good for the 30 day trial will every function available during that time period. Grab an image to store and then plug in the destination drive to replace the first on the 10 and simply restore the image you made.

  15. If you didn't grab the actual latest version of which program now was it? it may offer support for 10! The free trial for Acronis TI is the 2016 version that is now coming out. You can't get any newer then that. As for cloning drives that can take hours to let you know ahead of time while seeing an image created take only upwards of 34 minutes with Acronis when you have a lot on the drive! Figure another 20 minutes or so when seeing the image restored. 54 minutes compared to how long?

The tip of the day is create an image of the old drive and store that on another drive on the newer 10 case, remove the old drive to see that reinstalled on the 7 system there again, and then simply restore the image you made onto the new target drive once that in installed on the 10 system. The first storage with all of the 7 files intact will be back on the 7 machine there while you can then sort out what to keep or toss on the new drive once that is and sees the same once the image is resstored where you can hand pick over what will have to go and what to keep.

Here I've been working with multiple drives for a long time where I back things up as I go along and now have to only go through one folder of less then 20gb of files I had copied onto the 10 drive as I pick through older versions of VM Player and the web installer for some programs now outdated even for 7 as well as for 10! along with other downloads collecting over the years. And of course copy and paste is one constant in the pc universe for getting things done if a program doesn't! Been there enough times!
