Windows 10: How do I clone my Windows 10 installation from a larger HDD to a smaller SSD?

Hi,Today I bought a new SSD 240GB, and installed it alongside my preexisting HDD 1TB. My hope was to move my Windows 10 installation to the SSD for faster loading times. For this, I installed a third-party cloning tool DiskGenius. However, the app requires that the destination drive be smaller than or equal in size to the source drive, which is not the case here. When I went to shrink my HDD's partition size to below the size of the SSD, to make it fit, Disk Management would not let me reduce the partition size to less than ~446GB, too much to fit on my SSD. Please, how would I clone my

You can
clone larger HDD to small SSD with a professional disk cloning software as long as the used space is smaller than the SSD. You will not worry it will clone the unused space unless you use sector by sector clone mode.

I suggest you to clone your HDD to SSD with AOMEI Backupper, if the used space is larger than the SSD, you can clone only the OS to SSD and keep the HDD as data storage. This software is very easy to operate.

 

How to clone a larger disk to a smaller one

When you clone a Source Drive to the Destination drive, it wipes the Destination drive to prepare it for the clone. If you can still get into Windows, with the new SSD connected, press the Windows key +X and choose Disk Management. Here, in the lower pane it should show your SSD. It should say the file system is Unallocated Space. You can leave it this way if you still planning on Cloning. If you want to use it for Storage, you can Right click the space and Create a New Simple Volume, Format it and give it a drive letter.
