Windows 10: How do I copy files from my old computer to new that has Win 10 ??

I can easily copy/move files from old computer with XP pro via a shared folder or a flash drive to new with Win 10 .Cant work out how to copy straight to a desk top folder Its no hassle to copy/move from the shared folder to desk top but like to keep the desk top tidy. Must be a way to do this surely ???

How do I copy files from old Vista computer to new Windows 10

Well, it's working today. It did not work last week.

I still do not understand where my email contacts go. I want all of the contacts and emails to be on the new computer, not on an on-line service. There does not seem to be a way to import contacts into Mail or People on my new computer.

 

How do I copy files from old Vista computer to new Windows 10

The easy-peezy method is to copy your folders and files from the Vista computer to the Windows 10 computer. Not too elegant and may take a while to complete, but it works.

Keep in mind that the only things you can copy (the only things you want to copy) are your personal data, i.e., Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Favorites, Music, Pictures and Videos. You can't copy programs and configuration settings.

Copying your email (including your contacts and calendar) may or may not need some extra steps, depending on what email program you use. If you use an email service (Outlook.com, GMail, Yahoo! Mail, etc.) there's nothing to copy because everything is stored
in the cloud.

 

Create the folder on the Desktop then double click on it to open it. Do exactly what you did to copy to the Desktop but copy/paste (don't move in case there are problems, delete after the paste is successful) into the new Folder.

Can you describe where you are having a problem?

 

With XP I used to select all and copy as a block . But thats just to another folder in same computer . These docs I am trying to move across to new lap top are copies letters, various certificates, some old photos. If I copy a whole folder from XP say to 'shared folder' in new computer I just get an empty folder. Maybe I am trying to do something that wont work ? Can just copy singularly to desk top and skid them all into a new folder but thats messy. I thought there maybe a quicker way ?


Not fussed on this WIN 10 took me ages to find the how to delete a program thingy . Is very well hidden. Why complicate stuff? Because they can perhaps.

Don't copy yo the shared folder on the new computer. Create a folder on the Desktop then select all you want, right click and drag them to the folder on the desktop of the new computer and let go of the mouse button. Then you can select copy or move. Select copy. Once all are copied and you are sure they are where you want them you can delete them from the old computer if you want.

Likewise, you can select all you want, right click and select copy. Right click on the new folder on the desktop of the new computer then select paste.

 

You could also use Dropbox, or Microsoft's OneDrive for this kind of share.
They are quite useful for copying some files between two computers.
OneDrive is even built into Windows 10.

 

Wow Thank you .Will follow these intructions as didnt want to have all sort of misc files /photos scattered across the desk top and have to rescue !

 

If you have trouble connecting the two computers together via your local network, using a flash drive might be a good alternative.
