Sort by date added to folder

Hi there, thanks for your question.

In File Explorer, all sorting options can be viewed by following these steps:

    - Open the folder and right click inside of it, not on a file.

    - Go to Sort by > More.

This brings up a list of all possibilities of what to sort by. It doesn't look like there's an options for "date added to folder", but one of the other Date options may help, such as Date Created. You could create a copy of the file and move it in, so that
the date created matches the date added to the folder?

Please let me know if you need more information! Thanks!

Copying down file folders with names and growing dates

    Hi Ryan,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

To create multiple folders of same name with progressive dates, I suggest you to try the steps listed below and check if it works for you.

    • Open File Explorer and navigate to the location where you want the folders to be created.
    • On the address bar, where the folder path is displayed, erase the folder path and type
CMD to open a Command Prompt window.
    • Once the Command Prompt window opens, copy paste the following command and hit Enter:

for %d in (2019.6.17 Job Progress Pics, 2019.6.18 Job Progress Pics, 2019.6.19 Job Progress Pics, 2019.6.20 Job Progress Pics, etc) do mkdir %d

      Note:

Replace ‘etc’ with rest of the dates for the month. (Eg: ‘2019.6.X Job Progress Pics’ where X is the date)

    • Exit Command Prompt and see if multiple folders are created with the progressive dates on the preferred location.

Let us know how it goes.

    Regards,

  4. how do i copy files so that when i sort by date and name both are exactly the same

Possible in Explorer to sort files by date, but folders by name in same pane?

I believe this is not possible, and hasn't changed since Windows Vista or 7, but figured I'll ask and maybe learn something new in Windows 11.

I know that I can sort files by date and folders appear above them by clicking on the "Date modified" column heading, then while holding Shift key, click on the Name column heading, which causes folders to appear at the top about the date-sorted file list. So close.

The only problem with this is that folders are sorted by date too. Is there any way to get the folders to appear sorted by name, while maintaining that the file list below them remains sorted by date?

I know you can navigate folders alphabetically via the left navigation, but that's painful, because drilling down folders on the left creates a huge long unwieldy list of folders that makes future navigation slow (or you have to manually go through and close the folders, which again wastes time). My current work-around is to instead use the drop-down in the Address bar, which always sorts folder names alphabetically, but the problem with this is that the right most drop-down arrow for the current folder goes away as soon as you click outside the window and only comes back if you move between folders (seems like a bug), plus it requires an extra click and hitting a small drop-down arrow target, as opposed to just showing the folder list in the Explorer window in this order:

That's not a bad work-around, but I would still much prefer a way to just list the folders in Explorer in alphabetic order above the files sorted by date. Is there any way to do that?
