  1. How do I copy the value of a Registry Key, or part of the value, using a .reg file?

I want to set up a .reg file for restoring all my customizations when I reinstall or move to a new computer, but I do not have certainty that the file structure or registry values will be the same. So, I need modify some keys with imperfect information about their values. For example:Starting with[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Some\Key\Location]"FeatureDisableKey"=some_unknown_valueI want to end up with[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Some\Key\Location]"FeatureEnableKey"=some_unknown_valueSo on Computer 1, some_unknown_value is value_1 but on Computer 2 it is value_2, and I don't know what value_2 is yet, an

Can one delete the values of a registry key with a reg file

There's no wildcard capability in reg files. The closest you can get, using a registry file only, is to delete the key and then recreate the key. For the scenario you describe, the typical approach is to write a VBScript or PowerShell script that enumerates and deletes the values under the key.

  4. How do I copy the value of a Registry Key, or part of the value, using a .reg file?

Can one delete the values of a registry key with a reg file

    Hello @perfection,

First of all, we also have a Sister Site => ElevenForum

Unless you are experienced in using the Registry, you should leave well alone!

What I would suggest is that you FIRST export the Registry Key. This way, if things do NOT go according to plan, you have a reasonable chance of restoring it and it working.

Then change the required Registry Key values to zero or whatever, save it as new .reg file, and then apply [ Merge ] it.

You could also leave the main Registry Key intact, and remove ALL the entries beneath it. It really depends on what you are trying to do.

It might help us if you tell us which Registry Key you are referring to and why you want to do this, as there may be an easier or alternative solution to achieve your desired result. You could actually Post the Registry Key using the Code Tags if that will help.

You could also create a System Image PRIOR to ANY changes, just to be on the SAFE side.

    I hope this helps.
