Windows 10: how do I determine what the small number displayed on the Phone Link Icon means?

Occasionally a small number is displayed on the Phone ink Icon on my taskbar. How do I determine what this means. serval times it disappeared after reading a message that had not been read. currently the number 4 is displayed and all messages have been read, all update downloaded and installed ----

What determines the display number.

Does windows determine the display number based on on which port the various monitors are connected?

 

Small icons setting won't change

I suggest that you change or uncheck Use small taskbar buttons by following the steps below:

• Right-click the Taskbar.
• Select Properties.
• In the Taskbar tab make sure that Use small taskbar is
  uncheck.
  
  
  
  
• Click Apply and OK.

If the issue still persists, you can change the size of desktop icons.

• Right-click an empty space on the desktop.
• Select View and choose either Large, Medium or Small icons.
• Check if you can change the size of the taskbar button.

Icons not displaying

A while ago the icons for certain types of images began to not display in detail, list, or small icons view. Instead they simply display as a weird folder with 4 squares in the upper right corner, seen to the right >


This isn't exactly a terrible issue, but it is quite ugly compared to what it should be. I have tried rebuilding the icon cache manually, and that did not help.

Any suggestions are much appreciated.
