Windows 10: How do I do a full backup of files from my PC when my external hard drive only saves latest...

I normally backup my PC running Windows 10 to an external hard drive. My 400GB external hard drive became full so I couldn't backup any more. I then did a backup to OneDrive which is ok. I want to use my external hard drive to make backups so I deleted the old files to make space. But when I ran a backup to the hard drive it only saved 18GB of the newest files; those that hadn't been backed up to the hard drive before. There is 354GB of free space on the external hard drive.I have done research online and maybe the PC thinks those files have already been backed up. It was suggested to de

Yes, you may format the external hard drive. Follow the below steps.

• 
  Connect the external hard drive to Windows 10 computer.
  
• 
  Press Windows + E keys on the keyboard to the keyboard to open the file explorer.
  
• 
  Locate the external hard drive on left navigation pane in File explorer.
  
• 
  Right click on the external hard drive and click on
  Format.
  
• 
  Click Start and follow on screen instructions to format the hard drive.

Hard Drive / External Drive + Backups Configuration?

I run 2 500GB drives in RAID-0. (Seagate 7200.12 drives)

This is very good advice. I have lost my array once. *Mad I backup weekly to an external, and also copy any important files (work data, game saves, pics, etc.) to my 500GB "personal" drive. So basically, I have an image of my Array saved to the external, and a copy of "My Documents" backed up to the internal 500GB.

Moral of the story: Definately backup often, whether running a RAID array or not. *Toast :toast:

 

Creating a backup on an external hard drive

I wanted to create a backup on an external hard drive (Toshiba Canvio). When I connect the drive to the USB port (tried all of the available ones in my laptop), I can see the files stored in the drive, save files to the drive and basically perform all the operations on the drive too. The problem starts when I want to create a backup of the system on that drive: In the Settings->Create a backup->Add disk I can not list that external drive. How to create the backup on that drive?

Laptop: Lenovo y50-70
Windows: 10 v. 21H1
